    Hi Guys,

Just bought an oldschool Lancer Boxtype '82 SL. Just needed it to get around the city since taxi fares are eating my budget. It has a bit of repairs to be done so I wanted to know how much it would probably cost per repair and which would I prioritize first.

    1) Aircon works but it isnt cold. The fan is strong but the air that comes out only has a bit of coldness. Also, when you turn on the aircon after starting, you can feel the idleing go down and would sometimes shut down the car.

    2) The rear lights work but even if you press on the brakes, they dont become brighter. They just stay the same brightness. The signal lights dont work on either the front or the rear or even if you place it on hazard.

    3) May konting kalampag from the right front wheel pag dumadaan sa lubak.

    4) The kambyo is a bit wobly already and its a bit hard already to get the right slots. Especially from first going to second if di mo nashift ng tama iingay na.

    5) The steering wheel is dilapidated already. The foam inside is already durog na and is spilling out of it.

    6) naka scubs sya so medyo maingay, i wanted to change this for a quiet ride, but not too quiet hehehe

    7) di sya one-click start. usually on the second try lng sya tutuloy ng andar. But if you just used it and try to start it again. Usually no problems.

Well, thats most of it,i hope you guys can help me with the estimates and what to prioritize. Di pa kasi ganun kalaki budget so unti unti muna. Thanks in advance

    - the temperature is probably because of the insufficient freon level. try to have it filled-up with freon.

    2) The rear lights work but even if you press on the brakes, they dont become brighter. They just stay the same brightness. The signal lights dont work on either the front or the rear or even if you place it on hazard.

    - replace bulbs. yung sa brakes... double action dapat.

    3) May konting kalampag from the right front wheel pag dumadaan sa lubak.

    - tierods... i am sure of this.

    4) The kambyo is a bit wobly already and its a bit hard already to get the right slots. Especially from first going to second if di mo nashift ng tama iingay na.

    - replace first the transmission fluid.

    5) The steering wheel is dilapidated already. The foam inside is already durog na and is spilling out of it.

    - buy aftermarket steering wheels or have your current one refurbished.

    6) naka scubs sya so medyo maingay, i wanted to change this for a quiet ride, but not too quiet hehehe

    7) di sya one-click start. usually on the second try lng sya tutuloy ng andar. But if you just used it and try to start it again. Usually no problems.

    - clean first the batter terminals. pwede ng DIY ito.

not sure on the costs. but it could be of follows:

    freon recharging - 500 to 800 petot.
steering wheel (aftermarket) from 1500 petot up.
steering wheel adaptor - mga 300 to 500 petot.
transmission fluid - 250 per liter. you need around 3 liters.
tie rods - 700 pesos up. cost of labor is around 500 petot.

it's been so long, i don't know the prices now. but here's what you'll be up against:
    1. compressor or butas. either way, it won't be cheap. after all, it's 27 years... do this when you lose patience.
    2. the brakelight switch infront of the brake pedal, and the signal flasher. then the solenoids. then the wiring. it's not expensive, but it'll get your hands dirty. do these first! we don't want to cause others harm. if all else fails, it's the signal switch around the steering wheel.
    3. ball joint or tie rod end. not cheap. but can wait a little.
    4. maybe it's not the cambio. maybe it's the clutch mechanism, from the clutch pedal all the way to the friction plate. my favorite is the clutch fork and bearing. now, transmission labor is expensive, but many parts are affordable. the knowledgeable and honest mechanic will do it cheaper. otherwise, your siraniko will enjoy an expensive scholarship in transmission mechanics paid by you.
    5. for as long as the steering wheel is round... it's not illegal not replacing it. surplus and indie units are aplenty.
    6. what on earth are scubs?
    7. AH HA! the hard-starting-when-cold-and easy-starting-when-hot, engine! first, try tuning-up and replacing your high tension cables and clean all your electrical contacts. if you're lucky, this'll do it. if you're not lucky, consider saving up for a major overhaul. you can wait quite a while before you have to do this; the engine won't get much worse than what it already is now.
bringing an old car up to specs takes a lot of patience. and time. and money.
and judging from your thread, i don't think you are the mechanic-type. that gives you a big disadvantage... maybe you can get a knowledgeable "contractor" to do the mando-ing for you.

Exhaust system where there isn't one after the middle of the car. bascially it's just the headers and then a meter or so of pipe which ends under the middle of the car.

This can be "fixed" simply by adding extra pipe and a proper muffler and weld it together. Any reputable muffler shop can do this.

Sounds like it would have been cheaper to buy an AE89 Corolla 1.3L from a "Grupo Toyota" member or similar toyota car club.

Thanks for all the advise guys. This would really help me not to get bossed around by some mechanics who just want to make money. At least I have some ideas of how it would cost and what to look at fixing. Im not really that knowleagable in cars that much since im the type who buys and just drives hehehe.

This is my first project car to rebuild so all the help would be greatly appreciated. The car is actually in good condition if you look at the body and the interior which are still intact. Its just these problems that i mentioned that i need to fix.(I got the car for 35k by the way )

Any other suggestions on what to check and where to have them fixed would be very helpful. Thanks again tsikoteros

You might want to do a compression test on the engine to see if the engine is still leak-free or it would show signs of more trouble in the future if not fixed asap.

if you will just use the car as a daily beater, then i suggest you get the aircon and the suspension fixed muna. a cold car with a quiet, stable ride is great when you're driving in the middle of a heavy downpour, watching the helpless, non-driving pedestrians scramble for the few public transports available.... you will thank jesus you have car and not getting drenched outside...

since you do not mention "tirik" or serious engine malfunctions, i suggest you leave the car alone na after you get the above fixed, if only to save money. oh and get the brakelights fixed na din...headlights too. after that, everything else is a luxury. wobbly gearshift? may bushing yan sa baba ng shift boot, baka durog na, mura lang yun mga 100 petot yata. crumbling steering wheel? surplus, sa capalangan, name your style. tanong ka ng MoMo na fake with adaptor, kunin mo ng 500. 500 lang, kasi fake yun, at chop chop pa (but don't tell the runner boys that, sensitive mga kupal na yun hehehe).

the idea is to just keep the thing running and to squeeze whatever life you can out of the engine. your comfort should be paramount, so until serious issues come up, like overheating, i would advise against doing any preventive maintenance on the engine to keep costs and headaches low.

thanks voltscastillo natawa ako dun ah, sensitive runner boys hehehe yup so far wala pa naman "tirik" na binibigay yung car. Some minor idleing problems but that's it. yeah, ill probably get the aircon and electricals fixed first since its hard to drive w/o aircon during the rain. Sobra yung pag fog ng windshield hirap makakita. Nice suggestion on keeping the preventive maintenance at a low muna.
