    Hi fellow tsikoteers,
The story goes, i bought a second hand 99 local fieldmaster sometime may of 2009, simply put, the engine was still in very good condition, no black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, after i bought it, i immediately change all the oils from engine, transmissions, powersteering etc. to RP, flushed the cooling system just to see no rust and scale deposits exist. Been very religious in observing basic maintenance like changeoils and tuneups.

Recently (December 26, 2009), my driver used the car to go up to Tanay Rizal with my dad. To cut to the sad sad outcome, the car overheated to the point that the engine stalled, this happened after travelling approximately 60+kms already. The radiator cap was apparently missing (don't wanna dwell on why it was missing, maybe it was not properly tightened after the driver checked the radiator). Went with AAP to recover the vehicle and i noticed that the damage was really bad (oil and minute metal particles in the coolant reserve tank). Yesterday, after i had it towed to my trusted "talyer", the bad news was confirmed, may katok na ang makina.

Now im torn between two choices, overhaul or buy a surplus 4m40 (hopefully good condition) and recondition it by changing the usual gaskets, oils, water pumps, etc. Overhauling might be cheaper way to go, but im scared by the possibility that the overhauled engine wont be 100% condition. Japan 4m40 engine cost around 120k i think.

What are your thoughts and suggestions? balak ko pabuksan narin yung makina to see the extent of the damage, im willing to spend as long as mabalik sa good condition yung engine, point is i still have about diesel engines. TIA

If I where in your place, i'd go with a full overhaul. How sure are you that the surplus engine your gonna buy is 100% ok, unless you dismantle it. Then theres the change engine process with the LTO. Like you said trusted mekaniko, just be sure to use original mitsu overhauling parts. And you get a good machine shop to do the main job.

Or maybe you can have mitsu casa do it to be sure. anyway youre willing to shell out 120K on a surplus... Thats IMHO only

assuming magaling talaga mekaniko mo.. yung bang talagang walang ibang ginagawa kung di mga makina lang.. at least with a technical know how (mas ok kung may educational background hindi yung natuto lang sa kaibigan or kakilala) better go with overhaul..

ang gagawin dyan dismantle all parts check and replace... mostly sa machine shop gagawin yan.. yung critical part is assembly at setup ng valves ng engine

Salamat sir blue and yapoy for your quick response, trusted ko na tong talyer na to problem is specialty nya talaga mga honda engines, when i brought up the overhaul option to him, medyo hesitant sya, which i really appreciated. He admitted na mahihirapan sya sa 4m40, having done it before di sya satisfied sa naging result nung dating overhauled 4m40 ng client niya.

Request narin ako sa inyo, baka may alam kayo magaling magoverhaul ng engines specially 4m40. Honestly i avoid casa talaga, no offense, pero bad experience ako sa casa. What i usually do is buy orginal parts sa banawe, and have it installed sa suking talyer.

Bro: Talagang yan ang palaging problema ng 4m40 engine, i have experience that at yan ang reklamo ng mga master desiel michanik. my advise to you is to change your engine to 4D56 w/Turbo engine. Yan ang ginawa ko sa awa ng diyos 6 years na ngayon ang Pajero ko walapang troble at malakas parin ang hatak at hindi masyadong maingay, tipid pa sa FC. dahil 2.5L ang engine. ok bro!

Sir, if overhaul ka, try to check Warranty (name ng shop) near Mayapis brgy San Antonio Makati. Had my FM semi-overhaul last almost 2 years ago; 7k ang labor with 6 month warranty, for overhaul, it will be a little bit higher for sure.. so far ok naman ang gawa nila. combination of genuine, replacement and surplus parts ang pinakabit ko, cost me in total around 50k.

yung Starex namin pina OH dun sa E. Rodriguez QC. yung Wheels automall. may tindahan ng parts ng mitsu doon. magaling naman sila gumawa, nasa 143k kms mileage ng starex namin noon tapos umabot na ng 173k kms nung mabenta namin wala parin problem. siguro ngayon ayos parin yun.

parang bumalik yung performance nung brand new pa yung starex

Its been awhile, update lang ako sa status ng FM ko, i have decided to buy a surplus 4m40 engine, may nakita nako and by looks okay pa naman, talked with the shop owner, willing siya na paandarin muna bago ko bilihin, and bibigyan niya ako warranty sakaling may major na sira yung makina. Kung sakaling pagsalpak ko sa kotse and turns out major sira ng turbo or injector, papalitan niya hanggang maging maayos.

The cost of the engine was brought down to around 85k. I figured that a major overhaul would cost 80+k. Chop chop ko nalang yung old engine for parts since okay pa turbo and injection pumps etc.

I read somewhere here in the past that Japan 4m40 has a higher HP compared with local 4m40? Is this true? and why thanks everyone!

sir bisita as far as I know, yung mga 96 & up na jdm pajero with 4m40 has 140ps of power & 32 kgm of torque (Electronic control type distribution type jet pump) while the local has 125ps of power & 30.0 kgm of torque (Distributor type injection pump) similar to that of the 95 & below jdm's. But I could be wrong?
