Home > Nation > Top Stories Floods swamp Metro Manila; DepEd suspends all classes in NCR
    08/15/2007 | 09:10 AM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us (Updated 9:40 a.m.) Following the huge downpour that flooded the metropolis, education officials in Metro Manila suspended Wednesday morning classes in all private and public schools at the elementary, high school and college levels.

Teresita Domalanta, Department of Education (DepEd) director for Metro Manila, said the suspension was due to the heavy rains and flash floods that hit several parts of the metropolis.

"Suspended ang classes effective immediately today, pre-elementary, elementary and secondary, public and private (Classes are suspended immediately at the pre-elementary, elementary and secondary schools, public and private)," she said in an interview on dzBB radio at 9:08 a.m.

About 30 minutes later, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced that it has also ordered a suspension of classes at the tertiary level.

Amelia Biglete, CHED director for Metro Manila, told dzBB radio in an interview that, "suspended na ang classes sa collegiate level sa NCR (Classes are also suspended at the collegiate level in the National Capital Region (NCR)."

She said in Filipino that the suspension was necessary because "the situation seems to be getting worse ... the rains are getting stronger."

She added that students already in their universities were free to go home.

However, outgoing CHED Chair Carlito Puno said just minutes earlier that the CHED will leave it to the heads of colleges and universities to decide whether to suspend classes.

"I'm leaving the discretion to heads of colleges and universities whether to suspend classes or not," CHED Chair Carlito Puno said in a separate interview.

Puno was due to relinquish his post to socio-economic planning secretary Romulo Neri later Wednesday. - GMANews.TV

Pinagulo pa lalo ni Puno yung situation. Dapat sa mga ganyan, manahimik na lang. Paalis na nga, nanggugulo pa rin.

nagtataka lang ako bakit ang mga mayors or CHED/DEPED officials, parang takot na takot i suspend yun pasok....parang laging playing safe na discretion na lang ng mga schoold officials, as if naman 1 month nila isususpend ang school..1 or 2 days lang naman eh di idelay na lang vacation ng same amount of days na walang pasok... para ma cope up yun days na suspended.....

yan ang hinde ko maintindihan eh...

ayaw nila madelay ang vacation ... they (officials, kids, kabits) already have scheduled trips on the day after last day of school!

It's been raining before 7AM today, and the typhoon is expected since yesterday pa, tapos 9AM lang mag-de-declare na suspended ang classes???

Malamang i-extend pa nila suspension until Friday, kung kelan wala ng ulan. WTF!

Typhoon "Egay" (international code name: Sepat) slowed down in its westward path but also packed more strength and may turn into a "supertyphoon," the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Wednesday morning.

Malacanang suspended work in Metro Manila government offices starting 1 p.m.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, Pagasa said "Egay" was estimated to be 440 kms east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 700 kms southeast of Aparri, Cagayan as of 10 a.m.

However, it advised residents in coastal areas to be alert against big waves and storm surges.

Pagasa also advised those living in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes against possible flashfloods and landslides.

"Egay" now packed maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph, and was moving westward at 9 kph.

Pagasa expected "Egay" to be 420 kms east of Casiguran, Aurora or 510 kms southeast of Aparri, Cagayan by Thursday morning.

Come Friday morning, "Egay" was expected to be 190 kms northeast of Aparri, Cagayan or 200 kms southeast of Basco, Batanes.

By Saturday morning, the typhoon was forecast to be 230 kms northwest of Basco, Batanes or in the vicinity of Southern Taiwan

No public storm warning signals were raised, but Pagasa said the enhanced southwest monsoon will continue to prevail and bring rains over Luzon and Visayas.

Pagasa classifies weather conditions as follows:

    - Tropical Depression, maximum winds between 35 KPH and 64 KPH near the center
    - Tropical Storm, maximum winds between 65 KPH and 118 KPH near the center
    - Typhoon, maximum winds between 119 to 200 KPH near the center
    - Super Typhoon, maximum winds greater than 200 KPH - GMANews.TV

OT: 2 sundays ago while hearing a mass at quiapo church the priest pleaded that we all pray for rains to pour to avoid dry spells and power shortage, pinoys had prayed a lot that series of rains never ceases after, now pinoys are praying for rain to stop to avoid flooding.

i think we should pray that the rains would pour on the fileds not on the street of metro, when praying be more specific, so God wont be confused=)
