For two straight afternoons, the power has gone kaput in our subdivision due to lightning strikes. With a 2 yr old and another baby on the way, I'd like purchase a generator.

How does one compute the required power specs? I'd like to power at least 2 lights, two electric fans and my Internet modems and router. Powering a 1hp AC would be nice but not required.

What should I be looking for and where?

Just add up all the power load you will want running on the generator. Include aircon, ref, lights, fans, computer, etc. Just compute the total amount in WATTS (or kilowatts).

ANyway, the heaviest power loads will be the aircon, ref ... assuming the aircon is 2hp (roughly 1,500 watts) and ref is 1hp (roughly 750 watts), just to power these you will need 2,250 watts. Given that, you could do with a 3KVA generator. (with extra power for your other stuff).

But you mentioned you only have a 1hp aircon plus lights, fans, router, and probably a PC. With that load, you could do with a 1KVA generator but I would suggest getting a 1.5KVA for that extra margin of power.

My china 1.5kva runs the .5hp aircon and few lights and goes thru 4 liter of gas for 4-5hrs. Costs me 5k at raon.

Tibay naman, 2 years na, longest run is 3 fulltank with 30mi break only.

Every 2 month warmup, still two to three pulls start kagad. Just made an enclosure to make it more quiet.

    *niky

Typical 2 door no frost only runs around 200watts, 1kva would be enough to run those ref.

Sale ata sa ace hardware ngayon ng genset less 30%, nakita ko kanina lang sa festival mall. IMHO, 2kva is ok kahit naka 1hp AC plus ref and other stuff like ilaw and electric fan.

1400W (bitin ito para sa akin is around 13,999, 2kVA powermate brand is around 15,999.

3kVa for me is a bit large and 2kVa is very handy na din, so if you feel like lending it with your parents and in-laws better you can do so at the back of a small sub compact car like vios.

But if you have bigger car like Fort, Montero and the like transportation of 3kVa mabigat lang talga sya comparecd sa 2kVa.

    HTH

What additive do you pour in on seldom-used generators to prevent gasoline from going stale?

Before i tried using the additive that you can buy at ace and handyman, only to find out that it was also expired. Now rhey erased the expiration dates and still sell the product.

I use blaze on my china genny and it does not go stale even a year of storage. Every year i clean, changeoil and drain my genset.
