Palace welcomes proposal for purchase of new presidential car

MALACAÑANG welcomed on Monday a proposal for the acquisition of a brand new presidential car.

"Yes, we welcome the resolution of the House to provide the President with a more updated bullet proof car," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda told reporters.

Some administration lawmakers filed House Resolution 2191, asking the Department of Budget and Management to earmark fund for the bulletproof and bombproof vehicle for President Benigno Aquino III.

Among those who have been pushing for the purchase of the new car were Representatives Ben Evardone (Eastern Samar), Alfredo Benitez (Negros Occidental), Cesar Sarmiento (Catanduanes), and Mel Senen Sarmiento (Western Samar).

They were among those who inked the Articles of Impeachment against Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

The congressmen, in a statement, said the three official vehicles that the President has been using are now in sorry state and unfit already for Aquino's use.

The three official vehicles include two Mercedes Benz W221 S-Class limousines, which were bought in 1998, and a Mercedes Benz S-Guard automobile, which was purchased in 2007.

The last acquired vehicle was sidelined by the Presidential Security Group after it was damaged by floods when Typhoon Ondoy struck Metro Manila in 2009.

The lawmakers said the President is now using his personal car.
