    Now this is thinking differently!!!

Cebu transport groups snub fare hike
    By Liv Campo
    The Philippine Star 05/11/2005

CEBU — Transport groups here were unfazed by the statement of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Regional Rirector Rogelio Osmeña that the P2 fare hike in Metro Manila, if approved, will not be implemented in Cebu since no petition has been filed for such an increase.

Steve Cañas, of the Visayas United Drivers Transport Cooperative (VUDTRASCO), told The Freeman that the P2 fare hike is too much for the daily wage earner. It’s good if we are not included because the daily wage earners and students will be affected)," Cañas said.

Cañas said if they decide to file a petition for a fare hike, it would not be P2 (P2.50 in Cebu) because it would push the minimum fare to P7.50, which is an additional burden to passengers now taking two rides to reach Cebu City because of the rerouting scheme.

At the moment, drivers in Metro Cebu have to be content with the present P5 minimum fare.

For its part, Nagkahiusang Drayber sa Sugbo (NADSU) chairman Anthony Pogado said his group is still studying whether they should file a petition for fare increase.

Pogado said the proposed P2.50 hike is "too much" at this time, adding that it will only benefit oil companies as it signals them to raise the prices of their fuel products.

He added that it is not easy for Cebu drivers and operators to ask for fare increase since it would undergo a series of public hearings, unlike oil companies which are protected by the Oil Deregulation Law and can increase fuel prices anytime.

NADSU is waiting for the result of its petition seeking the re-implementation of the P5.50 minimum fare, which was approved last year but was reduced to P5 following the request of the drivers.

Sadly, yung mostly Manila-based groups like PISTON at FEJODAP eh hindi ganyan mag-isip.

If you examine the Pinoy pshyce, associated na talaga ang jeepneys sa mga mentalidad natin, lalo na sa mga lalaki na OFWs from M.E. Case in point: karamihan ng mga lalaking OFWs noon (and, probably ngayun din) eh pagkauwi sa Middle East, ano ang ipinupundar? Kundi jeep, taxi. Mas madalas, jeep.

IMHO, the heaviest contributing factor kaya hindi na kumkita ng maayos yung jeepney drivers and operaters eh dahil masyadong marami ng jeepney sa daan. If you would observe, most of the routes sa Manila na pagkarami-raming jeep, hindi naman puno ng sakay.

Most probably sa FX/van.

His drivers and I once had a friendly debate over the fare hike issue. Period.

When I observed what they did everyday pagkatapos ng pasada, talagang walang matitira sa kinita nila, dahil ganito ang ginagawa nila:

    1. Pagka-garahe, kain ng hapunun (normal yun)
    2. Pinahuhugasan yun jeepney (normal din yun)
    3. Mag-babayad ng 5/6 sa bumbay
    4. Mag-babayad ng utang sa operator
    5. Mag-babayad ng utang sa kapwa driver
    6. Yung natitirang pera, kundi isusugal, ipangiinom.
    7. Hung mga mahihilig, tsika-bebs ang bagsak

Hmmm...we have a Jeepney driver neighbor and yet napagtapos niya ng college yung dalawang anak niya. Hindi rin siya pala-utang, pala-inom, pala-chicks, etc. Nasa tao lang yan.

Hehehe.

IIRC, most of the 'jeepneys' in Cebu are Gasoline powered; Metro Manila's jeepneys are mostly (if not all), diesel-fed.

Aside from that, they are far more disciplined than those in the Metro.

its because mass transpo in Cebu only consists of mini-jeeps and taxis. wala silang bus dun. eh ang mahal ng taxi, so mag je jeep na lang sila.

looks more like someone in malacanang is getting nervous, kaya inaprub kaagad ung fare hike -- even though just last week the LTFRB said there will be *no* fare hike.
