once upon a time, a long long time ago, we had rat problem in the house and in the rice farm. i stumbled upon a chemical made by bayer germany. the concoction was zinc chloride. we used to chip the tip of snails and apply a sesame seed size of zinc chloride on the tail of the snail and set it off on the rice field. the rats took the bait and only gave them about two feet and the rats would belly up. in the house, we used cheese tainted with the same chemical giving some space for the rat to do his break dance to death. it was so effective than electricution, spring traps, cage traps and glue traps. and they do not need to learn nor warn the other rats. hopefully this zinc chloride is still available at some farm supply stores.
