DOTC bids out P25.2-M feasibility study for Mega Manila ferry service
MANILA - The Aquino administration plans to develop a ferry service that would connect Metro Manila to its neighboring provinces, the Department of Transportation and Communications said on Friday.
In a statement, DOTC said the project would benefit about 9.6 million residents in Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, Rizal and Bataan provinces. These areas are home to close to a tenth of the country’s total population and rely heavily on land transportation, resulting in traffic congestion, especially in many parts of the metropolis.
A study will be undertaken to explore the possibility of providing a viable alternative transport by capitalizing on Metro Manila’s major waterways, particularly the Manila Bay, Pasig River and Laguna Lake. These bodies of water, if linked by an efficient network of ferry services, can serve public transport demand in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, DOTC said.
The agency is bidding out the P25.2 million contract for the conduct of the feasibility study. Interested consultants must acquire the eligibility documents after payment of P5,000.00 and submit their eligibility documents on or before October 12.
Rehab of 4 ports
The DOTC also is bidding out the construction and improvement of four major ports in the country at a cost of P155 million, “in anticipation of the increased passengers and cargo throughput in the Philippines.”
About P109.7 million will be used for the Iloilo River Wharf, including the construction of berthing facilities, used tire truck fender, T-head, mooring bollard, and Ro-Ro ramp, among others.
Another P17 million will be used for the Port of Roxas in Oriental Mindoro, particularly for the construction of standard Ro-ro ramp, reinforced concrete platform and foundation piles, mooring fixtures, and fenders.
Some P13.7 million will go to the planned improvements in the Port of Surigao, which involves the construction of a one-storey cargo shed, plumbing and electrical works.
The last item up for bidding is the P14.5 million Port of San Carlos, Negros Occidental project, which involves the construction of 103 units single covered path walk and 89 units double covered path walk, complete with roofing and painting.
