4th UPDATE) THE YOUNGEST daughter of House Speaker Jose de Venecia perished in the fire that razed his residence in Dasmariņas Village Thursday night in Makati City.
Ma. Cristina Perez de Venecia, 16, was trapped in the second floor when the fire gutted the De Venecia mansion, located at Magnolia Street in the upscale residential subdivision, starting at 11:29 PM Thursday.
The lifeless body of the young de Venecia, nicknamed KC, was discovered in her room as firefighters controlled the blaze early Friday morning.
According to Noel Albano, the family spokesperson, nobody thought KC was still in the house before her sister received a call from her frantically saying she was trapped in her room, which was located at the farthest end of the second floor hallway.
Albano said KC then wrapped herself in wet blankets and laid down on the bathtub inside her comfort room.
"She tried her very best to save herself," Albano said in GMA-7's "Unang Hirit." He added that the steel window grills, which was standard in all of the rooms in the mansion, had prevented her from escaping.
KC was to graduate from high school this March, Albano added.
KCs remains are being cremated at the Loyola Memorial Chapels in Makati City.
The fire, reportedly sparked by a string of Christmas lights, first gutted the living room and house kitchen before spreading across the entire second floor of the mansion, where the private rooms of the family members were located. The first floor, where De Venecias offices are housed, was spared from the blaze.
The Speaker, his wife Gina and other family members were unhurt. They are currently staying at a neighbor's house, Albano said.
lagi po natin patayin ang mga Christmas lights bago matulog. Don't leave the lights open the whole day and night (thats what caused daw the fire sa bahay ni JDV).
kc de venecia died of suffocation. she was found inside her bathroom. according to firemen they could not break window becayse it is bulletproofed.
i guess buylletproof windows can save them from bullets not from fire.
to think that our small barangay owns a firetruck and a watertank, sila na mayaman na village doesnt own one, leaving their fate on a fire station situated at the other end of ayala...
to think na mga CEO karamihan pa ang mga nakatira... to think that they have safety nets sa kanilang mga investments, but none during fire.
well, i just hope this tragedy be a wake-up call for JDV to leave his 'trapo' ways and start using his power to institute genuine reforms for the good of the country. condolence to him.
ganyan talaga ang karma... malusutan mo man hahanapan ka pa rin ng weakness where its effect will be greatest...
kng nabalitaan nyo 2 yrs ago yun isang custom official na nakatira sa ayala heights dito sa malapit sa mwss ganun din nangyari nasunog christmas lights sunog yun mansion patay lahat misis nya at mga anak(trapped inside din), lahat ng sasakyan nya sa garage na you can only dream of were burned down. Ewan ko kng tatawa ako dito o malulungkot???
sometimes the very same walls you designed to protect you, will be the very same walls that will destroy you!
may she rest in peace....malamang suffocation nga...if i were in her shoes sa cr din ako pupunta kung saan may tubig...unfortunately sobrang kapal na siguro ng smoke/fumes at lumala pa siguro dahil sa di mabuksan na bullet-proofed windows...
christmas lights din ang naging cause ng isang sunog dito sa makati last month...patayin na lang kapag matutulog na...
So very tragic. To those making fun of the situation, have a heart! I doubt you'd be smiling if your own sister died.
We do have a fire truck, in fact I believe two, but the access to any house here is relatively hard due to the size. Its not hard to get lost in any house here, JDV's in fact has a pretty large second floor, just the first floor is pretty daunting. I was there last month and the sheer number of rooms would be an adrious task to go through, especially during a fire!
kawawa naman, and syempre condolences are in order. but i just can't understand that one of the riches families in the country, with billions of pesos at their disposal, could forget about safety against a fire. he is a billionaire, why did he not install a sprinkler system in his house?????? did they even have a fire/smoke detector installed????
I think what we should learn is that safety is everyone's concern. Whether you're rich or poor you should know how to get out of your house in case of fire. Also dont use cheap Xmas lights in your home. I only hope JDV will direct his energies into health & safety legistlation. We badly need it here.
