I remember in college, we had a history professor who learned Phil History overseas.

Dela Cruz, Cruz family names are popular as when Filipinos were asked to use a Christian names during the Spanish era, those who cannot read/write wrote a cross beside their first names

    i am now wondering,
whose choice was the name assigned to the person, back then?
i mean, did we have a choice on what name was assigned to us?

    hmmm. absent siguro ako nun

In China. I was once told na a specific area was given their family name.

So in 1 point in their history, the Ang's, Uy's and Ng were either from the same area or relatives (they use the same Chinese character)

    Madami din Tan.

Not only in Malaysia and Singapore but even dito sa atin.

Sa compact village (i.e. konti palang residente) namin, 4 families are surnamed Tan and they are not related

Mohammad or variations of this name is popular in predominantly muslim countries

Dapat sa mga christian countries Jesus o de Jesus or variations of this name should be as popular. O baka hindi lang dito sa Asia but maybe South America?

Could be Joshua. Because the name Joshua is synonymous with Jesus.

Joshua = God is Deliverance (hebrew language).

there are so many important names in the Bible. sa New Testament na lang, there are twelve Apostles.
Bible-themed names are easy to source.

    True Doc.

But if you want unique names.

I can't remember if i have met anyone who's real name is Judas.

I can only remember wives calling their Husbands by that name.

it was a popular choice of name in germany in the 30s.
it became extremely unpopular after WWII.
