    Manila Times (Mar. 28)

Only in the Philippines. Even before the airport’s opening, part of the ceiling of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 collapsed Monday morning. Because of the incident, General Manager Alfonso Cusi postponed the March 31 opening of the airport.

“To ensure the safety of the planned test run, we are calling off the scheduled opening on Friday until we are fully assured of the safety not only of the affected area but of the entire terminal,” Cusi said.

Earlier, the Manila International Airport Authority had scheduled the test run with Cebu Pacific. The airline was supposed make inaugural flights to South Korea and to Hong Kong.

“We have already asked the contractor Takenaka Corp. of Japan to explain the circumstances behind the collapse,” Cusi said.

The collapsed ceiling measures 80 to 100 square meters and is at the northwest portion of the arrival area.

I am imagining the contractor's reply:

Office of the President took 10% of contract price.
    Secretary of Finance took 10%.
    DBM took 10%.
    Senators took for 10%.
    Congressmen took for 10%.
    City Mayor took for 10%.
    NAIA officials took 10%.
    Travel expenses amounted to 10%.
    Labor was around 10%.
Imagine what materials we could buy with the remaining 10%.

I dont think ganyan kadami ang binigyan ng "lagay" ng contractor. Th company my dad is working for builds world class seaports (Batangas Port to name some) and several airports in the province for the government, pero ang padulas lang daw na binibigay ay for certain people(DOTC), not all branches of govt. And besides, kasama na sa contract price yung para sa "facilitation fee". In other words yung markup ng contractor, naka built in na yung para sa "facilitation fee". ganito na daw talaga kalakaran sa atin. Kaya I dont think its a common practice to buy sub standard materials. In fact panay imported nga ang ginagamit sa mga ganyan, they rarely buy local.

The only reason for this that I could see is, since baguhan lang ang Piatco palagay ko naging masyado lang silag garapal sa kita. Or they are just plain incompetent, or masyado nilang minadali ang pag gawa

well, even the newly built French International Airport had problems. Part of its roof caved in. (not just the ceiling)

Pwede pa naman ituloy ang soft opening di ba kasi
only very small portion 80~100sqm lang naman they
can use the south wing portion while they are repairing
    the damaged one.

Maybe this is due to Arch'l & M&E conflict during ceiling
installation process, those who worked in construction
    would understand this matter.

ok lang yun. lahat naman may bugs e. buti nga ngayon nangyari kesa sa actual opening day eh. just like what happened to the hongkong airport during its inaugural day. nagfail yung buong computer system. i don't think fraport AG would jeoperdize its international reputation considering niloko sila ng gov't AFTER maconstruct yung airport. mautak talaga gobyerno natin hehe. kung ginamit lang sana yung pagiging mautak sa tamang paraan....haaaay

at the same time buti walang nasaktan (unless corrupt official ang nabagsakan baka masaya pa ko hehehe). i just hope na matigil na yung pangungulit nila and just open the airport. para mapakinabangan na. the investigations/accusations can go on later.

saw this on the news last night. buti nalang it happened before the soft opening. at least walang may nasaktan. dapat double check uli nila lahat na structure to make sure that it's safe to use it.
