Beside those hot babes singing the US anthem in the Pacquaio-Clottey fight being more interesting, the goverment is again making a hoot over the way the Philippine national anthem was sung.

Justice head: ‘Pineda’s rendition may have violated national anthem law’

MANILA, Philippines -- Journey vocalist Arnel Pineda may have violated the law with his stylized singing of the national anthem during the Pacquiao-Clottey fight last Saturday in Texas (Sunday in Manila), according to Justice Secretary Alberto Agra.

Agra, concurrent Solicitor General, said Republic Act 8491 clearly banned the singing or playing of “Lupang Hinirang” in any way other than the original musical arrangement made by composer Julian Felipe.

RA 8491 imposes a penalty of imprisonment of not more than one year or a fine of between P5,000 and P20,000.

Agra said he did not get to watch Pacquiao's latest fight so he could not say yet if Pineda violated the law, as the National Historical Institute (NHI) charged.

“In no uncertain terms the law is very categorical. Under our law we must follow the arrangement of Julian Felipe,” he said when asked for comment.

Should the NHI decide to pursue a case against Pineda to set an example to other singers who would be singing the national anthem in such a prominent event, Agra said government lawyers would have to settle the legal question of where to file the case since Pineda sang it in the United States.

“We are confronted with the issue of jurisdiction. I haven't been requested to issue a new (legal opinion on that),” Agra said.

Walang kwenta yung pagkanta ni Arnel ng Lupang Hinirang. Para syang hindi singer. He sounded amateur. Nagulat nga ako because he can sing well.

Para syang paos na puyat na may plema... weird isn't it?

The good justice might have forgotten that we don't have jurisdiction over US soil (AFAIK). hehehehe.

I'd tell the NHI to kiss my a$$ and try to file a criminal case here for an "offense" which was supposedly done abroad. Our prosecutors would look pretty darn stupid.

While they're at it, they can fine every singly choir that sings it... TV stations using it in their sing-offs (sung in a slower, more dramatic way than original)... and just about everyone else.

I'm sick to death of hearing about this issue, honestly.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Huwag na lang kanatahin ang "Lupang Hinirang" in all major events para walang problema. And the NHI can go F*ck themselves.

Or how about asking Pinay singers to wear really skimpy outfits while singing the Anthem? That will surely be a treat

How do you prosecute someone for doing something against Philippine law if the act didn't happen in the Philippines? Last I checked Dallas is in the US the Philippine law does not apply worldwide just in the Philippines. Sad that the DOJ Secretary doesn't know where his jurisdiction begins and ends. For all the crying that the NHI has done every time Pacman has a fight how many singers has actually been prosecuted or fined? Zero, none, wala..because they can't enforce Philippine law to an event that happened abroad.

Kung ikinanta ang Lupang Hinirang sa tamang paraan as NHI wanted......

Nobody can actually sing it properly. It is a fast beat marching song. Binagalan na yan nuong unang panahon dahil nga hindi makanta.

    Aptly titled thread.
