this is sad...

COCKTALES - Reading Between the (Head) Lines » Blog Archive » Goodbye, Cherry Foodarama July 15,2011

Goodbye, Cherry Foodarama THE landmark Cherry Foodarama on Shaw Boulevard is shutting down next year on its 60th anniversary.

The one-hectare property that the pioneer supermarket stands on has been acquired by rapidly expanding Puregold retail chain of Lucio Co, who reportedly plans to
transform the supermarket into another S & R membership club to serve the well-heeled residents of neighboring Wack-Wack and San Juan.

The market chatter is that Co acquired the property for P500 million, a figure that
Puregold president Leonardo Dayao would neither confirm nor deny.

If the figure is correct, the price then translates to about P50,000 a square meter, inclusive of the building.

Puregold itself already has a branch, actually the very first branch, along Shaw nearer the Edsa Crossing.

From the Shaw branch in 1998, the Puregold empire has grown to 70 stores and nearly 18,000 employees by focusing on the the so-called C market. It inaugurated its 70th branch only last June 12 in Canlubang, Laguna.

As to Cherry Foodarama, it is not clear whether the owners, the Ong family, intend to relocate the Shaw branch or if they plan to permanently shutter it. Cherry still has two other branches, in Quezon City’s Congressional Avenue and in Antipolo’s Marcos Highway.

So sad to hear that..

Malakas naman ang Cherry sa Congressional Ave but I don't have an idea on the Antipolo Branch and also, Tinapatan din ng Puregold which is few block away on cherry.

From what I have heard, the CHERRY FOODARAMA - SHAW branch will move to their new location located at SHAW corner NUEVE de PEBRERO once the new structure/building is complete. This will be a more permanent move because they own the property as compared to the leased lot they used at their current location.

I was kinda surprised they didn't own the land where the current Cherry Foodarama stands (given how long it has been there).

Super8 still has a long way to have the variety of products that consumers prefer.

noong 80's diyan kami namimili.
naalala ko tuloy yung C.O.D. sa cubao, when they shut-down in early 2000. sakto napadaan lang ako sa loob, kaya pala malungkot yung mga personell last day na pala ng store. yung matandang may-ari bid his people goodbye, nag iyakan mga tao niya. kakalungkot lang din
coz i had fond memories with these stores.
eka nga: times are a changing, so must we with the times.
