'Daily Show' scored for calling Cory Aquino a slut

After a racial slur on the sitcom "Desperate Housewives", now comes an insult against former president Corazon Aquino on the political satire "The Daily Show" by Jon Stewart.

Deedee Sytangco, spokeswoman of the former president, said the slut reference was included in a segment by correspondent Samantha Bee titled "Is America Ready for a Woman President?"

The segment showed pictures of various women leaders including former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir and former president Aquino. Aquino's picture had the word "slut" written on it .

"Whoever put that graphic has a sick mind. Why would [they] do that to a revered democratic icon all over the world, known very much for her clean living and religious life?" Sytangco told ABS-CBN's morning show "Umagang Kay Ganda."

Sytangco said the segment of the Daily Show's September 18 episode is posted on YouTube.com.

The segment showed Bee doing mock interviews with various personalities about the possibility of having a woman president in the United States. Interviewed in the segment were Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women; La Shawn Barber, columnist for the Washington Examiner; and Mystery, a tv show host for music channel VH1.
The segment showed Meir's picture with a word balloon saying "Oy!" while Thatcher's image was digitally manipulated to show her face on the body of pop star Britney Spears.

"I pity the people who did this," Sytangco said, adding that Filipinos should react strongly to the insult as they did when the medical profession was criticized by the hit US TV series "Desparate Housewives."

"We Filipinos should also react to this, that we feel strongly about them reviling a revered icon here in the Philippines," she added.

Sytangco said that if she could second guess the former president, she would just tell the people to just pray for the people behind the insulting picture.

The Daily Show is a political satire/comedy show. As far as I'm concerned, it wasn't a real diatribe against Cory, so I think she should let it pass.

the daily show does it to everyone. their president, actors and actresses, fidel castro, kim jong il, ghandi, mother teresa, the pope, even God... don't take everything to seriously.. para naman tayong walang sense of humor nyan, pati satirical news papatulan.

The Daily Show is one of the few news programs left that I still respect...

Simply because they hold nobody and nothing as sacred. A lot of news programs nowadays are extremely biased... from Fox's "rah rah rah" pro-Republican stance to ABS-CBN's constant bashing of the Arroyo administration... everyone has a hidden agenda, so they pull their punches where they don't want to offend their stakeholders.

The Daily Show? They make fun of everyone. But underlying the political satire is some strangely intelligent reporting and terrific research. It makes it hard to watch, sometimes, because sometimes, in the middle of the joke, they insert actual, factual reporting...
