Rotary engines were a failure when they were first used. They were powerful, efficient & made an unusual sound. They also failed a lot. Eventually, they found their use in a/c compressors.

I'm thinking they will use them only for special projects like supercars and the like.
Experimentation for it's own sake. Pure research. That's what make innovations possible.
Since supra made a return, makes sense if mazda will revive rx8.
For nostalgia purposes.

True. But if you ask me, using a Wankel engine for this purpose is like going two steps forward but one step back. It does benefit from a more silent vehicle, but the inefficiency would undoubtedly go against what all these going green and going electric trend are trying to promote.
Asked why Mazda will use a rotary engine as a range-extender, Hitomi said: “the rotary engine isn’t particularly efficient to use as a range-extender but when we turn on a rotary, it is much, much quieter compared to other manufacturers’ range-extenders”, which is seemingly suited to the near silence of electric cars.
