MANILA, Philippines – Travel time to Baguio City will be reduced starting this long weekend as a portion of the 88.6-kilometer Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx) will open Thursday, October 31.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 30, Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said the first phase of TPLEx, which spans 17 kilometers from Tarlac City to Victoria and Gerona in Tarlac province, will open in time for the anticipated increase in traffic on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.
The builder of the expressway, Private Infra Development Corporation (PIDC), moved the opening by a day.
“TPLEx will not only provide faster, safer, and convenient travel north of Metro Manila during this peak season and beyond, it will also help enhance business and tourism in Central and Northern Luzon,” Abaya said.
The first phase is connected to the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, which, in turn, is connected to the North Luzon Expressway. From Gerona, TPLEx will have exits in Paniqui and Moncada in Tarlac; Rosales, Urdaneta City, and Pozorrubio in Pangasinan, and Rosario, in La Union.
The section up to Rosales will open mid-2014, and the section up to La Union, in 2016.
On October 25, the Toll Regulatory Board authorized the issuance of a Toll Operating Permit for PIDC, the infrastructure unit of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corporation. – Cherrie Regalado, Rappler.com
