Hi guys. I changed my wheels a couple weeks ago, but kept my stock lugnuts. Is this okay or should I have bought aftermarket lugnuts for my Rotas?

I read somewhere that certain wheels may have different seats for the lugnuts. Honda has round-headed lugnuts for its stock wheels, but some wheel makers have flat seats, tapered seats, etc. requiring lugnuts with similar heads. The story goes that if you use the wrong kind of lugnuts on your wheels, they may loosen by themselves under the forces of cornering, and that would be a Very Bad Thing.

So far I haven't noticed any loosening of the stock lugnuts I used.

    Any insights?

Are your stock lug nuts compatible with the new wheels? If not then it might be a good idea to get the correct ones. Imagine mo, kung rounded yung original nut tapos flat yung new rims, there'll be very minimal surface area dedicated to holding the wheels on. Whereas if both had flat mating surfaces then the fit is perfect. At low speeds it might be safer but at high speeds, definitely dangerous.

imho, although the story is true, there is no way it can happen on normal driving conditions. and again, imho, aftermarket lugnuts are more on the looks side on these driving conditions.

That was the same thing I thought---aftermarket lugnuts being more of a looks thing than anything else.

The stock lugnuts do seem to work naman as far as fitment and thread friction is concerned. If anything, I actually have trouble loosening some of them---the common effect of local mechanics overtightening lugnuts...

For me kasi I'd like to have the peace of mind that the lug nuts fit flush and perfect to the wheel, not just for looks although that helps too

Did a bit more reading. Apparently most aftermarket wheels have conical ("tapered") seats for their lug nuts, and it seems any aftermarket wheel upgrade should automatically come with a lugnut swap as well.

Talked to a friend from Jazz-City United. I'm getting his slightly used Work lugnuts later. I'm keeping the stock lugnuts for use on my spare tire, though, as I didn't change that one.

    An update:
I tried the Work RS lugnuts I bought last night and compared them with the stock lugnuts.

The 19mm Honda stock ones are noticeably round-headed, and don't extend as much from the end of the lugnut's body. If it's a matter of just fitment with aftermarket wheels, they will work, but the pressure is concentrated in a much smaller area because the seat on the wheels is conical. These are best used for any Honda rims.

The 21mm Work RS lugnuts definitely have conical heads. The mating surface is much more extended from the lugnut's body, so they will work better with aftermarket wheels that have the same-shape seats. A bonus: they come with keyed wheel locks.

I'll try to post pictures later.

Do aftermarket wheels need aftermarket lugnuts?
