Hi guys, I bought a 2nd hand vehicle and the rims of the tires were spray painted by the previous owner using Pylox. It now looks old and faded. I am planning on having it repainted or restored when I saw Plasti Dip on Facebook and now I am looking forward to trying it out. I would like to know if I should have to remove the old paint like sanding it or should I just clean it then I can have it painted using Plasti Dip?

Or should I just bring it to a shop who specializes in restoring rims/mags?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Bring it to the professionals. Cost starts at around 2k / set.

If you wanna try to DIY then take a look at this

As with most people, I suggest in bringing it to a shop for specialized service -- better service in fact.

However, simply using Plastidip has no consequence naman so feel free to experiment it if that's your drift. I myself had tried it myself before and I found.. uh.. I suck at it.

Try to have a smooth surface. You need not sand it naman but if you did, application should be better.

Hi guys! Thanks for the replies, I think I might bring it to a shop and have it restored first then when it is smooth and restored I think I will try Plasti Dip.

    Might I suggest another alternative?

Plast-dip may be a waste of time as they tend to peel off easily. If you want something that would last, powder coat it.

actually that's the purpose/property of plastidip - to be peeled off easily, without damaging the original paint/surface under it. hindi talaga siya pang-matagalan compared to normal car paint. sumikat itong product na ito dahil sa ginagamit nga pang "test", kung bagay ba ang kulay, tapos kung ayaw mo na e easy to peel off agad.

    I actually understand that.

Let me put it this way... you use Plasti-Dip when you have nice-looking rims to start with, and which you decided a change in color without ruining the finish. But in the case of the TS, it's somewhat apparent that what he has are a set of rims that are no longer in their best shape. Otherwise, the original owner wouldn't have painted over it with Pylox. In which case, you actually want to "re-finish" the rims, so to speak.

Anyway, it was an alternative. Just sharing what I would do... Powder coat it now and when I get tired with it, I Plasti-Dip them.

Thanks guys for the inputs, actually the rims are originally really good looking and I felt that spray painting by the previous owner was not a good idea, now the spray paint has faded and it looked really terrible. My intention now would be to bring it back to its original look and probably try out Plasti Dip.

here's my family ride with dipped wheels and grille edges. i recently got into plastidip after watching videos from dipyourcar. it wont compare to paint or powdercoat, but easy diy, cost, and removal sold me. i had it done first by someone with a spray and after 1000+ mile trip, the fronts peeled i think since my van has thick tires (low pros wont have this problem) and extreme temperature differences during the trip. i peeled the dip completely then decide to try it myself and bought a few cans. all i covered the rotors and calipers then apply a thin coat every 15 to 20 mins. the overspray on the tires peels easily after about 5 coats. i can do it even with my bad back and ankle. im planning to do red on valentines, then green for xmas.

i recommend it if it is cheap there, if someone wants to see how a color look, temporary option, or just for the fun of being able to do and redo again easily. if you decide to do it, watch the videos. hope this helps.

p.s. my first post attaching photo, if it doesnt work, ill reupload later.

PlastiDip is not a durable paint if you want something that will last a long time. Best is to have it powder-coated for a durable finish.

One of the best ones around is PROMASTER. Last time I had a set of wheels done with him, it just took a week to be done. You'll need to have the wheels unmounted before dropping it off at his shop in Cubao.

Thanks for the reply, I just watched some videos on plasti dip and I might try it out probably after my rims have been restored.

Thanks for your referral, I might check it out. Do you have any idea how much they charge? I will only be needing them to remove the spray paint on the rim and probably smooth it out or polish a little bit.
