I recently changed my brake pads at 20K kms. Madaling maupod yung stock pads ng kia. They replaced it with original kia pads and sad to say na ganoon pa rin ang rate ng pag-upod ng pads (*34K kms). The tell tale signs of brake dust in the mags shows na malambot ang pads ng kia.

Are there alternative brands of brake pads that can last longer? If we replaced it with another brand (harder), will it cause damage to the rotor? Smooth pa rin yung rotor ko using the original kia pads.

    tnx

    Rodski

Do you always rest your foot on the brakes the moment it lifts off from your accelerator pedal? You might be lightly tapping the brakes as a driver's instinct. Riding your brakes could prematurely skim the pads off at an early stage. There are numerous aftermarket brake pads available on our market. The only thing you will have to consider is, if it fits your discs.

I also experience premature wear on our Starex oe pads. A set would only last for a couple of years.

I don't rest my foot on the brake after I lift it from the accelerator. This is a well known problem with kia and some GM cars like astra and vectra have the same problems with brake pad wear (brake dust on the mags very evident).

I tried bendix before in my 95 corolla xl and it really scratched the rotor so much so that it required refacing. Too much spirited driving (left foot braking).

Are there other brands that are not too harsh on the rotor?

Brake dusts occurs when the pads are organic, switch to non-organic compounds to lessen. Downside as like you pointed out, much stiffer for the rotors.

I'm currently using EBC pads, but they are also hard enough to scratch when dirt comes in contact between. With lesser dusts ofcourse.

hi rodski. i also heard this comment in the forums about Kia brake pads having fast wear, so i asked the casa to check said pads when i went in for my 20k PMS last week. ayos pa naman yung original pads, sabi ng service advisor, kaya di nila pinalitan.

will try to check if i also have the tell-tale brake pad dust on my rims. i never noticed if it was present before.

OEM Kia pads are next to crap. Ang lakas maubos and they leave this **** like residue on your alloy wheels. Ganyan yung sa Besta ko dati. 1 year pa lang ubos ang pad ng sagad and nadamay pati rotor. Bumili na lang ako ng Japanese replacement sa Banawe. Mas mura pa and less brake dust. Ganun pa din naman ang braking.

Hello Mickey177 - You will know when your pads needs replacement when you step on the brake and the parking brake warning light turns on in the dash board. This means that the level of brake fluid is being sensed to be below normal. Masyadong upod na yung pads.

Don't fill up the brake fluid. Replace the brake pads and the brake fluid level will be back to full level. The first time I replaced my pads was around 22K km. Ngayon nasa 34K km na and ang brake fluid level is halfway between max and min. Sign ulit to na malapit nang mag warn yung parking brake light. Walang two years yung carnival makaka dalawang set yat aako ng brake pads.

I'll try a japanese brand on my next brake service.

    pareng rodski,

my carnival is at its 22tkm. nangyari na rin sa kin yung nagwawarning ang parking brake warning light pag pumepreno ako. i checked the brake fluid reservoir and found out na below minimum ang level ng fluid. top-off lang ako at nawala na. though me naririnig akong "tok-tok" sa front right side pag normal braking. nakairita nga eh. is it an indication na kelangan na magpalit ng pads? atsaka meron bang made in japan na pads para sa carnival?

    hello benchph1,

Yes, sir its time to change pads. The fact na may "tok tok" sound during braking could be an indication of contact problems with the pad. Have it serviced before it scratches the rotor. Also ask them if they have an alternative sa original kia pads. If you use the kia pads babalik parin and problem after hit 20K km on the new pads.

This is what happened to me so sa susunod na Service ko I'll change the pads to a jap one.

    thanks for the tip, rodski

will be sure to pay extra attention to my brakes these next few months as I just passed the 20,000-km mark on my odometer.

    otep,

ano ba ang magandang brand ng japanese brake pads na pwede sa kia?

Ive got a kia carnival too. put 93t kilometers in it na.

During hard braking do you guys experience a vibrating sound sa brakes and vibrating brake pedal? I experience that in my kia and Im not sure kung its the ABS working or something is wrong with my brakes.

    suggestions would be helpful.

    thanks

    benchph1,
Your brake fluid level went lower because your pads have worn down and the pistons have moved forward to compensate. In my case, I just added brake fluid and completely forgot about it. I was only reminded by a very irritating grinding sound. I would later find out that it was the brake pad backing plate, destroying my right brake rotor.

    mikey177,
I think I just bought Akebonos when I changed. Anything but OEM was what I was looking for at the time. I think some Bendix pads will fit the application. Just bring your worn pads as sample.

    IDJ180,
If you experience this during hard braking, it may just be the ABS doing its work.

It wouldn't hurt to see if your rotors are out of round. If they warp, they will cause pedal kickback. A little rotor refacing will usually cure this.

Bench 1 - OTEP is correct on the warning light issue. The fact that you filled the reservoir only solved the brake warning light. The brake pads are still worn out and will eventually damage the rotor which caused the "tok tok" sound.

IDJ180 - A pulsating feel on the pedal and sound while hard braking means an uneven braking surface. At 93K km it is due for refacing. I had the same experience when I wapred the rotors on my corolla a few years back. The abs will only produce a squeaking electrical sound with no vibrations. It is the sound produce by the servo controls in controlling the brake pressure to prevent a lock up.

Otep - thanks for the jap brand brakes. How is the performance of the Akebonos in terms of rotor wear? How many kms have you clocked on the akebono?

    rodski,

I clocked only about a year's worth of motoring on my new pads as I had traded in the Besta for the Pajero. In that span of time, they did quite well and the reduction in brake dust was outstanding.

A bit OT, but I didn't want to start a new topic just to say that Signet put out an ad yesterday announcing that they are now selling the gas-engine variant of the Sedona.

This variant comes with a 2.5-liter V6 quad cam 24 valve gas engine. I wonder how it performs against the diesel variant.

Anyone with an extra P995,000 (for the RS version with manual tranny) lying around willing to buy one and give us an evaluation?

    Hello Mikey177,

The sorento comes with 3 engines.

    2.5L CRDI 140HP diesel
    2.4 inline 4 dohc 139HP gas
    3.5 v6 quad cam 195hp gas

visit www.kia.co.kr to see the specs

I learned that the sorento was about to hit our shores last month. However, they told me that they will be offering the gas engine. They still weren't sure if it will be the v6 or 2.4L gas. I'm not so sure they have a 2.5 L v6 quad cam

The Sorento has lots of features like self levelling suspension, abs and airbags. I hope the RS has this features.

I really wanted this SUV but with the diesel engine. Oh well I still have to wait for it to be offered. I LUV diesel!!!! hehehehe

    otep,

    benchph1,
I was referring to the brake pad's backing plate. It is where the brake pad friction material is attached to.

When I wore down my brake pads, the friction material was totally gone so the plate scraped my brake rotor. Ouch.
