Hyundai unveils new Tiburon Coupe at 2006 Guangzhou Motor Show

Hyundai Motor has issued the following press release:

Hyundai Motor Co. today (24 July) unveiled it´s updated Tiburon Coupe at the Guangzhou Motor Show. Featuring a subtle redesign of the front and rear with an emphasis on new optical elements, the new Tiburon retains all the magic of the original design which has won a growing number of admirers since its first introduction in Sept. 2001. With its contemporary styling and sporty appeal, the new Tiburon radiates pure excitement among the young and the young-at-heart.

In standard trim, the Tiburon is powered by a 2L 16-valve DOHC with Continuously Variable Valve Timing coupled to 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai´s Shiftronic semi-automatic gear selector. For the performance minded driver, a 2.7L V6 is available as an option along with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

hmmmmm, it somewhat resembles the Mitsu Eclipse

The profile of the two doesn't look close to me. Personally, I like the Tibbie's styling better.

As for the tail of a Tigra.... I thought the Tigra's tail looked more like an older Acura's. I'm thinking.... take the Tibbie spoiler away and it's tail looks like a...... Dodge Neon's.

I agree the rear looks like a Neon w/o the spoiler. I can't see the Viper front that you are all mentioning. It almost looks like it's smiling, similar to the 1st gen Neon but with different headlights. The rear quarter panel reminds me of a Pontiac Sunfire. I hope it looks better in person though because I really liked the last 2nd gen Tiburon design. I read in one of the magazines that Hyundai is looking to make the next redesign a rear drive like a true sports coupe should be.

Hyundai should adapt the new Coupe to use the Sonata's 3.3L V6 and couple it with the 6-speed M/T. That should give the Coupe peformance deserving of its looks. It needs a better clutch too.

Hehe... bakit naman phat_azz ang naging handle mo?

There's a little too much "Jaguar" in the front and rear light clusters, and the rear haunch looks too high... much like the 90's Tiburon... I like the facelifted current one better (same design as 05, but with blacked-out lights).

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

As far as the Eclipse is concerned, only the Tiburon's rear lights resemble it. In fact, the facelift looks much like the very first model. At least it's not offensive unlike the lost-in-space facelift of the 1st generation.

In the power department, what it needs is a lighter 4-banger with more horses. The 2.7 V6 is too big, heavy and not quite tuned for sports cars. It won't outrun the entry-level Integra/RSX either. One tester commented that the 4-cylinder version is even more nimble in handling than the V6, probably because of better weight distribution of the lighter engine. In simpler terms, slap in Honda's K20 and this car could be perfect.

Not much news yet. Obviously, it's still the same car, not the rumored RWD sports car that Hyundai says they're developing. Only news so far is word of a tire-pressure monitoring system and stability control.

    I like it.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Looks like a cosmetic change only. If they made it rwd with the 3.3 V6 then you have a 350Z and RX8 competitor with the right suspension tuning.
