Several pages earlier I told you guys that I saw a hairline crack in the sidewall of one of our Starex's Hankook tires. I promptly had it replaced with Dunlop EC 201, together with the other tire on the same axle.
I was planning on having the other pair of Hankooks replaced when the van's odometer hit 40,000-km. It's nearing 30,000-km at the moment. Well, apparently, hindi na makapaghintay itong naiwan na mga Hankook, at nagkaroon ng blowout yung van nuong Biyernes.
My wife's driver was driving at the time, and they had just left Tarlac City en route to Urdaneta when it happened. Thankfully, they weren't going too fast on the provincial road, so my driver was able to control the van and pull over after my wife heard the strange thumping sound coming from the right rear portion of the van.
Here's a photo of the damaged tire:
Luluwas pa naman dapat kami ng Quezon City nung weekend gamit ang Starex, kaso dahil wala pa akong oras magpapalit ng gulong, eh di yung ever-reliable Sedona na lang ang dinala namin. Also, sabi ni misis binabantayan talaga kami ng mga guardian angel namin, kasi nangyari nga ang blowout sa provincial highway... paano kung sa NLEX kami naputukan with its higher speeds and faster vehicles passing by. Things might have turned out much worse for us.
Hence, my advice to potential buyers, make a deal with the sales agent to change the tires to a better brand even before the vehicle leaves the showroom. It's better to be safe than HankookLast edited by mikey177; February 12th, 2007 at 12:08 AM. Reason: To correct odometer reading

mikey177,
yikes! i'm glad your wife's driver was able to control the van after the blowout, and that your wife is safe. whew! to some extent, this kind of blowout is reminiscent of the Firestone and Ford Explorer combo. which is why we decided to ditch the stock hankooks for dunlops. perhaps the hankooks (and kumhos in our past experience) weren't suited for our rough terrain and tropical weather.
oldblue,
VGT na nga daw yung mga bagong starex? can anyone confirm this? kinda reminds me of another ford experience wherein my sales agent manually erased and changed the hp figures on the printed handout he gave me. just the same, we got the exped from him, since we really intended to get it in the first place. re the Starex, whether VGT or otherwise, IMO, it is potent enough. ;)

Hello jamesron. Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to the growing Starex community!
The front bumper of the '99 and earlier models isn't metal, IIRC. It's the bumper of the "big face" models that are metal. What's the front of your Starex, the big face or the small face?

mikey 177,
I hope you can bring the affected tires to us or any Hyundai dealer, for us to properly evaluate your tires. Because base on the pictures you have shown, your tires could have been damage due to impact break or sidewall cut.
So, our recommendation to everybody is to drive safely and check inflation pressure every week. If you found any signs of irregularity, consult a tire engineer.
I manage to scan a page from Falken tyre adjustment manual, I hope this will help.
