Things are shaping out pretty well for Korean automaker Hyundai. After introducing its first engine about seventeen years ago, Hyundai now makes a variety of 4-clyinders, 6-cylinders, all the up to the Tau V8 that it will offer as an option on new Hyundai Genesis sedan.
Until 1991, Hyundai relied on Mitsubishi for engine technology, now, according to Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of the R&D and Corporate Product Planning of Hyundai-Kia Motors, the automaker can build anything it wants.

“We could build a 600-horsepower supercar, or we could build a $2000 people’s car. But the car we have always wanted to build is the one you drove today [the Genesis],” said Lee at the recent launch of the Genesis sedan in Korea.
The tables seemed to have turned since Hyundai now provides technology for the 2.0L and 2.4L Theta engine for both Mitsubishi and Chrysler. The Korean automaker has produced about 1.9 million of them in 2007.
Mercedes-Benz is also showing interest in Hyundai’s engine technology. At the Beijing Motor Show this year, Lee recalled, Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche said that he would like to partner with Hyundai for four-cylinder engines.
But nothing is official yet, and Hyundai doesn’t seem too interested as Dr. Lee said “I am not sure we want to share our technology.”

    Here's the article from May 2008: http://www.automobilemag.com/feature...nes/index.html

    Interesting, any updates on this?
I wonder if Dr. Lee still doesn't want to share their technology with Mercedes?

CRDI technology is pioneered by Robert Bosch of Germany and patented by other engine manufacturers.

Just a correction, FIAT SpA (the mother company of Ferrari) pioneered the modern Common-rail then was subsequently sold to R Bosch of Germany due to financial problems...

Well, I dont think the Germans cant develop some kind of technology or engines like that. I think it is more of cost cutting issues, licensing to use an engine is more affordable than R&D imho.

    well i have 4 comments....

    1. this bodes well for the knowledge gained by Hyundai/Kia over these 2 decades of car manufacturing....

    2. hhhm "don't want to share their technology....." hhhhm i like their tone of arrogance/aka yabang. keep it up!

    3. Common Rail Diesel was inventedby the Italians...perfected by the Germans. even my Caren's CRDi uses German ECU/PCM and Injector/Pumps made by Bosch..... there's a high-chance that the new R-Series engines are also using components made by that same company..... wag nyo nga bentahan Hyundai/Kia sa kayabangan nila! bwahahaha.

    4. Even with the advent of R-Series engines, the BMW 320d is still tops in terms of Engineering excellence. over 200hp with dual turbo's.

so my advice....even though Hyundai/Kia has made great improvement /strides in terms of engineering prowess and quality . better keep a humble outlook, lest u will look really bad on your downfall....

Sometimes, people don't need class to win flat out.

Class is just marketing BS and elitist dumbness.

given the same amount of money...i'd still pick a hyundai. i appreciate the "classiness" of a car, but i really don't wanna pay for it; for me it all boils down to efficiency and maintanence.

Anyways, i think we're getting out of topic...no doubt the Germans can come up with cutting edge engine designs, but they do tend to be expensive and high maintenance; siguro nakita nila that Hyundai managed to sell CRDi cars at (relatively) lower prices, and at a profit, and they would want to learn, or at least buy, into that.

imho this is the same basic problem they had in WW2: they tend to develop very high tech vehicles, but vehicles that tend to be hard to produce, operate and maintain; the Tiger tank was superior to any tank during that time -- if it wasn't too busy breaking down in the mud B) They also developed this artillery piece that used tungsten tipped shells -- one of the rarest metals you can find.

Dunno what this means for the brand though: i'm sure some diehard MB fans will have a problem having a Hyundai engine under the hood. Nothing personal i guess, it's just that if you're an MB fan, you'd want an MB car with an MB engine.

Sana nag spin off na lang sila ng brand that sells cars with Hyundai engines.

lastly...the whole situation is quite ironic: di ba ung MB100 dati e hiniram ng Korea ung badge ng MB? Ngayon naman ung MB ang kumukuha ng makina sa Hyundai.
