Door hinges, trunk lid hinges, fuel filler door and the hood hinges are supposed to be lubricated. The most recommended lube is motor oil. I have used petroleum jelly or Vaseline regularly. The Vaseline penetrates the crevices(no pun intended) of the hinges and is not unsightly compared to wheel bearing grease.
WD40 dries up in a matter of days. It's a penetrant and a temp lube at most.
I personally use motorcycle chain lube. I have a can of the stuff from back when I was still riding a bike. It's a penetrant like the WD40, but the lubricant component is a lot more dense and lasts for years.
