Hi Guys need your inputs..please! My friend bought a 2nd hand Esi M/T last month lang. Complaint nya during traffic & no gas applied the idling will suddenly drop almost "mamatay" yung car. But if a/c is not "On" no problem naman & di nangyayari yung sudden drop ng idling. I said before he brought to any shop i'll ask "tsikot" expert first. More power!!

best way to find out what the problem is to get it scanned and if the live data is available, or if the scanner is capable of driving the IACV , it will be a lot easier to know what it is . hence, no guessing.

    I drive a 2nd hand '96 Honda Civic Lxi

My problem is yung rpm drops when on idle or sudden braking, mas pansin or mas grabe when I switch the AC on. Went to Honda-Commonwealth, they did overhaul throttle body (based on the description on the receipt). He adviced to replace thermostat and switch "kasi nakarekta na daw radiator ko". And he asked if nag-overheat ako, I said no. Kasi bagong replace lang nung motor a month ago, kasi 'di gumana. And so I asked my 2 brother-in-laws, they said na okay lang na ganun na naka-rekta na. I assume okay lang din, kasi ganun na nung nabili siya. So now, ganun padin and I don't know what to do next. Some people I know adviced me to have the alternator checked?

    Thanks.

Addendum: I'm a new car owner so I only have little knowledge and none on troubleshooting.

Have the idle up actuator checked. This device raises the engine's rpm when the aircon is turned on.

I also suggest a general tune-up since the car was recently acquired 2nd hand. Have the oil/oil filter changed together with the spark plugs and air filter element. Have the brakes checked too as well as all vital fluids of the engine (transmission oil, coolant, brake fluid, etc).

Have the aircon system checked at a reputable shop also. The compressor may be giving the engine extra unneeded load, the reason why the unstable idling when aircon is engaged.

This might be bumping an old thread, but, I searched high and low in tsikot with regards to the 2000 Civic's IACV. I can't find any solution to the dropped in the idling when the aircon is on or when the headlights is on or when you turn your steering wheel. Sometimes the low idling is so bad that the engine wants to shut down. But, it goes up again quickly to normal idling. When you are slowing down in traffic and the rpm goes down, it dips again and the engine shakes as you shift gears. But, it goes up again to normal. It's really frustrating having to deal with this.

Anyway, I've finally found a solution to this. Go to any mechanic who knows how to clean the throttle body and the IACV. Once he has finished cleaning and assembling everything back again, you have to reset the ECU, otherwise, the bad idling will still be there. You do this by disconnecting the negative terminal of your battery. Wait for 15 minutes. Connect your negative terminal again and start the engine. But, do not step on the gas or turn on anything. Let it run for another 15 minutes. After that, turn off the engine and start it again immediately. This will reset the ECU and you need to drive your car around as the ECU reprograms and learn the new configuration.

Everything now is working fine. No more shaking and the idling now is very stable and no longer drops drastically even when I turn on the aircon at full blast, headlights, hazard lights, wipers, defogger, stereo, cabin lights, brake lights, steering and power windows all at the same time. I thought it was a bad alternator. I checked the battery and the alternator with my multimeter, I found nothing. Everything is working fine.

I hope this will help someone trying to solve this low idling problem. Thus, my post for your reference.

+1... cleaning throttle body works for older vehicles. Had an old car namamatayan immediately after a cold start. Casa quoted 40-50k for a new TB set. Pinalinis lang namin... hindi na namamatayan.

Idling Drop during traffic & a/c is On
