Cops surround 'hot car' garage in Mandaluyong

Traffic Management Group operatives surrounded Thursday an autoshop in Mandaluyong City suspected of housing stolen vehicles.

Senior Inspector Joel Mendoza said an informant tipped them off about stolen vehicles being repaired at the autoshop at 49 Kanlaon St., Barangay Highway Hills.

He added that the autoshop has no license to operate from Mandaluyong City Hall.

Autoshop owner Avelino Fortea, however, denied entry to the policemen after they failed to produce a search warrant.

Fortea, 56, admitted that he failed to get a mayor's permit for the business but added that he did not work on stolen cars.

He said all three vehicles in his garage had proper documents.

He added that his son repairs cars for exhibits.

"Sometimes we add glitters or apply a tri-tone for the color and a marble finish. That's what we do," he told DZMM.

Officials from the Mandaluyong City Hall permits and licensing division are also investigating the autoshop.

Lack of warrant aborts police raid

A TEAM OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL Police Traffic Management Group (PNP-TMG) Task Force Limbas failed to inspect yesterday a garage allegedly storing stolen cars for lack of a search warrant.

Neighbors reportedly said the small car shop owned by Avelino Fortea at 49 Kanlaon Street, Barangay Highway Hills, Mandaluyong City, accepted car modification jobs.

But Fortea’s lawyer, Byron San Pedro, said, “There is no stolen vehicle inside... they are not hiding anything illegal.”

The lawyer said a legal team was considering the filing of charges against the PNP-TMG for harassing the Forteas.

San Pedro said the PNP-TMG operatives arrived at around 3 a.m. yesterday.

“My clients knew the police needed a warrant to enter,” he said.
The police waited for the search warrant, but the document had not been issued up to lunch time yesterday.

San Pedro said the family’s clients could vouch for the legitimacy of the business.

The lawyer said the shop had a permit from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), although it did not have a business permit from the local government.

Local business licensing officers said the shop would be shut down soon after failing to get a business permit for five years.

The family lawyer said the lapse was being remedied.

Fortea’s neighbor, Adolfo Foz, vouched for the Forteas, saying they were devout members of El Shaddai, a Catholic charismatic group.

Kasabay din ng incident na to sa Manda, pinuntahan nila yong Manlongat (nagdemanda kay Rossana Roces before coz tinawag nyang "carnapper") sa Valle Verde. May na-confiscate na Infiniti coz yong plate na nakakabit is registered to a Pajero.

i've been to this shop a few times, medyo questionable nga ang kanilang operations...i'm saying this because one time they were selling a (new body) silver corolla altis, w/c acdg to them was made from two total wrecked altises joined in the middle. benta nila 350 lang yata. I was really impressed with their workmanship, i mean there was really no trace of the joint from any angle i look in the car. and i consider myself an expert in detecting accident damages in cars. I knew this was racket that should have been reported here at tsikot, but i later found out the fortea's grandchild had a heart problem and been incurring huge medical bills and had a more forgiving stance. but after seeing this incident, it got me thinking.....di kaya bumibili sila ng total wreck na cars from insurance companies para gamitin lang ang title for their stolen cars? tapos i-swap lang ang body number and engine number? it's entirely plausible IMO.

even if they have ten grandchildren with heart problems, that would not be justifiable for them to buy carnapped vehicles from carjackers/carnappers.....

para saan pa ang batas kung ganoon na lang.....if proven guilty, i hope they all go to jail

I even remember seeing this shop on tv on makisig channel in dominic ochoa's full throttle/mad about wheels. He even is interested in acquiring an old school celica na nakatambak lang tapos right-hand drive pa. They have old school cars as per what I've seen sa show like an sr-5 corolla 2dr a/t which they even have the owner of the shop and the show's lady guest to drive around the neigborhood. A Mitsubishi 74 colt na mukang running condition, and of coarse a couple of new cars being restored. So shocking talaga if that is their "under the table transactions". And yes they should be arrested even if one of the family members are sick. Ano yun palagi nalang ba ganun ang excuse pag nabubuko ang mga illegal activities, they have choices/options in a way that they dont have to do this stuff but they made their choice so face the consequences.
