Do you guys encounter any BAD experience with Medical City?

I, for instance have several incidents to share.

    Incident #1
I had a fever that day. Went to Medical City (Sta. Lucia mall). Doctor as usual checked my breathing, temperature, asked several questions. Advised me to have CBC and X-ray then come back tomorrow for the results prior prescribing a medicine. I said, “Doc I can’t wait till tomorrow. The fever is killing me! Can you prescribe a medicine which can at least ease what I’m feeling?” Doctor said, “No. We need to wait for the result coz this might be due to Dengue.” Not satisfied with the doctor’s suggestions, I left and asked for a second opinion from another doctor who holds a small clinic. I told him what the doctor in medical city suggested. He smiled and said, “Simpleng lagnat kelangan pa ng CBC at X-ray? Kung meron kang Dengue dapat nakita na nya yung symptoms.” “Ganun talaga pag Medicard(HMO) ang gamit mo. They’ll ask you to do several diagnostic steps kahit di naman kelangan para kumita sila.” I said to myself, “WTF!!! pahihirapan nila pasyente nila para lang kumita?!”

    Incident#2
GF is having a hard time urinating. Went to Medical city (Ortigas). Attending doctor asked questions and advised my GF to do a Urine Culture in order to determine the bacteria and the medicine that will kill it. Was asked to come back after 3 days for the results. We came back. Doctor said, “There’s no bacteria.” GF asked, “What should I do next? It’s painful to urinate. You mean you’re not going to give any medicine?” Doctor said in an irked way, “Eh sa walang growth e! Ano irereseta ko sayo?!” Grabe ang galling nya wala daw growth. P2,000 pesos lang naman nagastos namin para lang sabihin nya yun(GF has no HMO). Again, we asked for a second opinion in a nearby clinic who specializes in urinary infections. Doctor was puzzled as to why the doctor in medical city advised to do a Urine Culture when a Urinalysis should have been done first. I told her, “Dahil mas mahal ang Urine Culture kesa Urinalysis?!” Doctor just smiled at me. GF was cured after a couple of days. Thanks to that doctors competence and professionalism.

Di lang ako ang naka-experience ng ganito. Even my fellow call center workers. Medical city is starting to s*ck big time!

Charged to experience na lang, next time you can try other hospitals for comparison. Medicard hold office here in St. Luke’s. during office hours on weekdays, you have to go to their satellite office for the initial check up and referrals but in case of emergencies and/or weekends the Emergency Department is always open and ready to help. Just show your medicard HMO card.

It's either you shop around or you have your own good 'ol reliable private doc.

I'm in ENT but we get admissions for non-ENT cases (acute gastritis, cardiac problems) because that's how much the patients trust my bosses.

Also don't forget that different hospitals have different guidelines when it comes to management of cases. However, it is still always prudent to at least provide symptomatic relief while awaiting for the results of your work up [and the subsequent definitive management].

First, I've just lost my respect on that small clinic doctor. He shouldn't badmouth other doctors di ba? It's unethical. Sana kung katabi nya yung unang doctor habang sinasabi nya to-- for all we know meron narinig yung first doctor sa lungs mo kaya sya nag-suggest ng x-ray then he might have noticed a rise in dengue cases that time kaya he wanted to make sure you're alright and that you don't have one.

Second, may laboratory ba sa loob ng clinic sa sta. Lucia Mall? As far as I know hindi naman sila kikita pag nagrerequest sila ng mga labs or procedures basta sa loob ng center mo ipapagawa. I've heard of one HMO-based doctor whom they noticed was instructing patients to have the labs done on another laboratory center, yun ang may kick-back pala and they fired him.

In this case, the doctor immediately asked for the labs, ngayon naman nagrereklamo tayo dahil "Bakit labs kaagad?!!"
HE he he... kawawa naman yang doctor na yan. Pag di mo ipapagawa kaagad ang labs, magrereklamo. Pag pinagawa mo kaagad, magrereklamo pa rin...
Most doctors would not be affected by this trend. Let's suppose that this doctor was not and he requested the labs because he thinks they're really needed; sana you asked the doctor first why he requested the labs... kung mukhang nagpapalusot lang, then by all means get a second opinion.
Me, I wold rather trust a doctor working for an HMO kasi pag madaming nagrereklamo sa kanya they can fire him. Pag small-time tapos ganun na mukhang TH na mang-agaw ng patients by bad-mouthing them, he's not accountable to anyone except himself. Pag mali sya, so what? Pag sa HMO at may reklamo, they would retrieve the chart and review the case. Minsan pag pinagmi-meeting mga yan after clinic hours to review the case.

** I've answered something like this before, di ko makita sa thread na to, baka nabura kaya pinost ko na lang ulit.

I would like to make sure that this was what was said. If it is, the he could have just prescribed paracetamol or advil for the fever while you're waiting for the results.

Marami kasing patients na nagsasabi, "Dok, antibiotic lang naman kailangan ko talaga. Hinid mo ba ko mabibigyan ng antibiotic?" That's the time we say, "We have to wait for the tests first so we can make sure. There's a rise in Dengue cases right now, and if we find out later that it's Dengue, then the antibiotic I would have prescribed is completely useless and you just wasted your money buying them."
