MANY bus drivers have a criminal bent probably because that's what they've been told by the bus operators. Pity the pedestrian that they bump because these drivers will run him over twice or three times until the victim dies.
One such driver is Rollie de Leon of Santrans Bus Co. who allegedly ran over a father and his child, whom he ran over and over on to make sure they were dead.
Larry Quimpo, 42, and his five-year-old daughter, Ronila, were riding on a motorcycle in tandem when they were sideswiped by De Leon. Told by some passengers that he had sideswiped two pedestrians, the driver backed the bus and ran over the victims.
The elder Quimpo and the girl tried to stand up after they were bumped, but the bus rolled over them many times. De Leon escaped after the accident.
What made De Leon do that? He wanted to save his operator from paying hundreds of thousands in hospital bills and medicines for the father and child.
You see, one life costs only P50,000. Altogether, the Quimpos' lives totaled P100,000.
When my staff at "Isumbong mo kay Tulfo" interviewed De Leon, he said it was an ordinary accident.
But there were witnesses. Two of them were children who said that the bus rolled over the victims several times. Children don't usually lie in a spontaneous interview.
What would you have felt if Larry Quimpo were your brother and Ronila your niece, given the statement of the witnesses?
You would have been tempted to take the law in your own hands.
