MANILA, Philippines -- A lone but daring thief made off with a black Honda sedan (license plate WFP 617) early Thursday morning in Pasay City while its owner was buying cigarettes a few meters away.
Police are still investigating how the unidentified carjacker could have gotten near the car, driven by Leemart Gayo of Pinagtipunan, General Trias, Cavite.
Police Officer 3 Allan Valdez of the Pasay City police said the carjacking incident occurred at around 1:30 a.m. near the corner of Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue and F.B. Harrison Street in Pasay City.
Investigation showed that Gayo, 26, was driving the car, accompanied by his friend Darwin Barias, 23, when they decided to buy some cigarettes at the nearby 7-11 convenience store.
The Honda SIR sedan was registered to an Anthony Barias, presumably a relative of Darwin.
Darwin stepped out of the vehicle to buy a pack of cigarettes while Gayo also alighted from the car to check its tires.
Police said the still-unidentified thief inched closer to the car, whose doors were left open. The man then got behind the steering wheel and sped towards the direction of Roxas Boulevard.
The two victims said they left a cellular phone and Darwin's driver's license inside the stolen car.
A flash alarm has been sent to the Southern Police District to alert other police stations of the carjacked vehicle.
