SIXTEEN people were injured after over a dozen vehicles collided on the rain-drenched southbound lane of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), a tollway official said Wednesday.
Radio reports said a driver of one of the ill-fated vehicles had died but officials could not confirm this.

At around 2:30 p.m., slippery roads caused a 10 wheeler-truck, a Genesis bus, another 10-wheeler truck, an Isuzu Trooper, a six-wheeler truck, and a Toyota Hi-Ace van to collide near the Sta. Rita exit in Bulacan province, said Larry Olveña, NLEX traffic control specialist.

Seconds later, a six-wheeler truck, a Bataan bus, a six-wheeler Mitsubishi Elf truck, a Sierra Madre bus, a Toyota Altis sedan, a Victory Liner bus, a Candon bus liner, a Ford Everest, another Victory Liner bus, and another six-wheeler truck joined the smash-up, Olveña said.

"The accident could have been caused by the slippery roads," he said.

The line of damaged vehicles extended from kilometer 39 to kilometer 41
of the highway. It also left only one lane of the highway passable to vehicles, causing a traffic jam, Olveña said.

The extent of the injuries of the victims, who were brought to nearby hospitals, was not immediately known, he said.

Just saw the news sa TV Patrol World. According to the MNTC, the vehicles involved were running within the speed limit when the accidents happened; madulas lang talaga yung kalsada since the expressway is asphalted. However, they also denied liability in the accidents, saying that sufficient warnings have been posted in various parts of the expressway for drivers to take heed.

Yup. Kung ano yung takbo ko sa asphalt roads pag tuyo, mas mabagal pa pag basa as a precaution. Then there's always the prospect of oil spills on the road that might aggravate the situation.

I find it amusing that MNTC is not claiming any liability at all for this vehicular accident that lined-up to 2 kilometers.

They shouldn't be liable as accidents do happen. Kahit san countries naman it happens especially if that's the reason (environment)...

Just because the roads are asphalted and not cemented doesn't mean that it's inferior in design as most highways around the world are asphalted.

Eto yung mga cases where travelling slow + ABS + proper distance is important... Highway driving + bad weather should never equate to high speed (regardless of limit)...

TWO persons were killed while 14 others were injured after over a dozen vehicles collided on the rain-drenched southbound lane of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) on Wednesday, officials said.

The fatalities include a bus driver and a passenger of a private utility vehicle, Robin Ignacio, chief of the NLEx traffic control room, said in a radio interview.

Pero for sure, sobrang helpless ka during that moment... Nabangga nadin ako dati, mga 15mph lang takbo sa may bridge sa NY, biglang hinto yung mga cars sa harap, naglock yung brakes ng rental namin na bulok na gen1 323, bangga sa Camry sa harapan, wasak oto namin, ni daplis wala yung Camry... As in super bagal lang takbo namin nun, bagong ulan din...

Mahirap talaga mag-drive in adverse conditions. Typical stopping distance on wet roads is twice of what it is on dry roads. That's why it's important to slow down and increase the gap when it's raining.

I've "explored" the limits of my balding tires before on NLEX... thank goodness for ABS + full-time 4wd for saving me.

Mga peeps bago mangyari yan around 9:30 am, may accident din dyan, bago ako umabot sa San Simon exit, may nag bangaan din don, isang vios sa harap inararo nang FX nakabig nang driver sa kaliwa ang manebela, bangga sya sa barier, tapos nakasunod kaagad ang innova, inararo naman nya ang FX, kasunod din ang passenger bus, inararo naman ang innova, kawawa naman ang innova, na sandwich, parang softdrinks in can na inapakan, i hope no casualties too.

The three casualties were supposedly unbelted at the time of the crashes. The bus driver and the two back seat passengers of the Everest.

The initial accident of the SBMA Hi Ace rolling over multiple times seemed unsurvivable but the driver walked away because he was belted.

May they rest in peace.
