Five Killed in EDSA Bus Robbery Holdup

    Manila Times

FIVE people were killed when a group of armed men robbed a passenger bus Thursday morning along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. Three of the robbers were arrested and were identified as Ryan Ibarra, 22; Jojo Baytasan, 27; and Ronnie Hernandez, 27, while three other suspects were killed during the exchange of fire with police officers. Recovered from them were three .45-caliber pistols and a 9-mm pistol.

Initial reports said the robbers numbering to six boarded a Navotas-bound JMK busline (TWK-291) on Buendia in Makati City at around 9 a.m. The robbers who were armed with handguns and grenades then declared the holdup upon reaching Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong City and started taking cash and belongings of the passengers and the earnings of the bus.

Upon reaching Cubao, one of the passengers was able to get off the bus and immediately inform the authorities about the on going robbery. Quezon City police, Sr. Supt. Magtanggol Gatdula, in a television interview aired on ANC channel said QCPD mobile group chase the suspects and was able to stop the bus near the cloverleaf area in Balintawak after firing at its tires.

The frustrated suspects then shot and killed the bus driver, initially identified as Lauro Santos of Angat, Bulacan, and a passenger identified only as a certain Veloso after the latter attempted to get off the bus while it was stalled near Balintawak. The robbers then got off the bus and were able to commandeer a red Mitsubishi Adventure (CSX 806) and took off toward the North Luzon Expressway.

The police chase continue until the suspects was forced to abandon the vehicle near a subdivision in Lawang Bato, in Valenzuela City because there were already running in flat tires. The suspect then fled toward a residential area but police was able to kill two of the suspects in the process.

The remaining robbers tried to commandeer a dump truck but authorities were able to catch up with them and killed another suspect prompting the others to give up.

I saw this news item at 24 Oras. Patay yung 3 holdaper, at nahuli naman yung 3. Sa Ch. 2, nakunan pa yung habulan. Pero minalas yung bus driver at isang passenger.

Kudos to our law enforcers.

They'll just post bail, and then mangho-holdap na naman yang mga yan...

Kaka-exit ko palang from the NLEX (mga 15-20min) when I heard this sa radio. The robbers were firing at the police, buti walang natamaan na ibang mga motorists.

    Excerpt from Inquirer.net

The suspects dragged Cruz, Villatima, and another female passenger towards the Chowking restaurant where a maroon Mitsubishi Adventure (CSX-806) was parked. The passengers were able to get away from the suspects who ordered at gunpoint the driver of the car to drive towards the North Luzon Expressway.

The car drove through the toll gates past the barricade while pursuing cops were delayed when NLEX toll keepers reportedly insisted that they pay the toll.

Mobile patrol units from the Motorcycle Anti-Street Crime Operations, the QCPD, and the Caloocan City Police waited for 10 minutes until NLEX security officers raised the barricade.

sorry kung I will sound anti-Christian pero....

Good job for the policemen who stopped these scumbags.

Too bad though that they had to go through this"

A delay that should have been unnecessary in the first place.

What if the PNP were to charge the present NLEX toll keepers (and probably the management) with obstruction of justice??? Surely MNTC wouldn't want that to happen, right?

Overheard sa news, because of this incident, PNP is considering to bring back bus marshals which to me would lessen, if not totally eradicate this kind of crime.

Especially ngayun back to school na naman! Ingat sa holdup at kidnap....haay!

Good thinking on part of the lady who reported to the Police. Yun ang may presence of mind.

Galing nila. That's really a wonder.

Yung sa NLEX, dapat may special free lane for police, ambulance, firetrucks etc. Even sa SLEX. Businesses should be in-sync with the society (na market din nila in the first place) hindi puro pera ang iniisip ng private companies.

Dapat free ang mga pulis sa buses, not only they provide protection, we should give it to them because they risk their lives everyday to do their job. Pag may nangholdap naman jan, at capable yung pulis, for sure, he will defend the whole population inside the bus.

The slain passenger is the brother of my "kumare," the "ninang" of my daughter. He had a business to attend to in Cubao but since he doesn't feel knowledgeable driving in the area, he decided to take the bus (parking his car somewhere in Las Piņas). I guess when it's really your time to go...

That's why I'm thankful to the tsikoteers who are quick in their replies whenever I ask for directions to places I'm not familiar with.
