Share ko lang po experience ko since first time ko mag drive sa baguio. naka convoy ako sa bro in-law ko since mas sanay sya mag akyat baba sa baguio or sa la union. gamit nyang auto honda city '08. ako naman escape 2.3 '05. to cut the story short, after namin mag baguio, bumaba kami ng la union. we took naguilian rd. along the way, ok naman yung mga twisties. nakaka-overtake kami sa mga sasakyan na tumatabi sa gilid. hindi namin inoovertake-an yung ayaw mag pa overtake. knowing the danger plus kasama namin families namin. pag sa tingin namin, kaya nang mag over take and safe, inoover take-an namin yung mga inaabutan naming sasakyan. along the way inabutan namin yung jeep. so hindi namin basta basta inoover take-an kasi nga madaming kurbada. then later meron vios sa likod ko na naka bright and nakatutok sa likod ko. sa isip isip ko, ok alam ko din na gusto mo mag over take, pero sana mag observe muna sya. kung mukhang mag o-over take kami, then, courtesy na lang. alam ko naman na walang rules sa ganyan. kaya nga din kung kaya nya tabasin yung nasa harap nyang mga sasakyan (ako, bro in-law ko at yung jeep) then mag over take sya. pero hindi nya ginagawa. nung naka kuha kami ng timing na maayos, naka over take kami sa jeep. then naka over take din sya, pero naiwan din namin sya sa mga kurbada, hanggang sa wala na yung head light nya. then meron ulit kami inabutan na sasakyan. ganun ulit nangyari. hanggang inabutan namin yung isang mini van na disente at maayos naman ang takbo. so nakaabang kami kung kelan kami pwede maka over take kasi alam namin na kaya namin mag drive ng mas mabilis sa kanya. alangan naman over take-an namin sya tapos mabagal pala kami. then maya maya dumating na yung vios. nakatutok sya ulit sakin ang yung kalahati ng auto nya nakalabas sa kabilang lane. ang bwisit dun, naka bright na naman. sa bwsit ng bro in-law ko, hindi nya inover take-an yung van. so ako, para dun sa vios, go ahead. over take-an mo kaming tatlong sasakyan. pag yung tipong o-over take na sya, babalik sya ulit sa lane kasi kurbada na (hindi nya ba naisip na puro kurbada ang naguilian rd? hehe) hanggan sa umabot kami bandang ibaba na. then pinilit nya umover take. palampas pa lang sya sakin, napansin kong meron ilaw papalapit samin. tricycle yung paparating..bumubusina. so nagbagal sya. natawa ako sa kanya and bigla ako naawa. so inopen ko yung harap ko para makapasok sya. at the same time iwas disgrasya sa kanya, sa tricycle, at para na din samin. pero sa likod pala ng vios, merong lancer (new model pa eh). ganun din. pinilit din mag over take pero alanganin, pinapasok ko na lang di ulit. hanggang sa makababa kami ng bayan at dun lang sila naka over take sa mini van.

natatawa lang kami ng bro in-law ko. kasi, ano ba nasa isip ng mga yun? dapat mag over take ng mag over take? eh nung walang mabagal sa harap namin, wala naman sila sa likod namin

well, isa lang yan sa mga high light ng byahe ko na ako ang drive for baguio. mas nag enjoy talaga ako sa bakasyon namin sa baguio, though pangatlong beses ko na yung nagdaang weekend. kasi ako ang nagdala sa family ko sa baguio. plus, 1st time ng bunso naming-prinsesa ko makapunta sa baguio. she's 7. and gustong gusto nya yung lamig ng baguio.

pahabol: okay sa TPLEX, sarap daanan. umabot kami ng 150kph nung bro in law ko, pero sandali lang. most of the time 120-140kph

Unfortunately marami talagang wala sa isip sa daan. Coincidentally, Vios (Gen1) din yung nakasabay ko sa Kennon the last time na alangan mag drive tapos ayaw magpa-overtake nung uunahan ko. Pag ganyan, lots of patience and keeping distance is a must to avoid any incidents that will involve you in his stupidity.

nun bang naka overtake sa inyo eh umover take pa ulit.si vios, tapos umovertake ulit ung lancer.tapos umovertake na ulit kayo sa mini van matapos kayong overtakekan nung vios na nahihirapang umovertake.madami talagang ganyan mahilig umovertake.

di bale overtakekan mo nalang sila pag natutukan mo.at wag mo ng pa overtakekan..

    Frake,

At most of the time pala 120 to 140 kph.

Because Kennon was still being worked on about this time last year, we took Marcos. It's indeed a more high speed, albeit farther route. On the way up, was lucky not to have any jack*$$es trying their luck. Hard to overtake a surging GS on the climb. On the way down, same route, that's when an Altis and an Innova - who I assume knew the road much better than I did - did their overtaking maneuvers. They made sure to leave me braking space, and overtook when clear. Because of their familiarity of the area, both lanes were part of their 'driving lines'. Inggit ako, pero could only watch.

The tricycles in Tarlac were those I wanted to mow down.

All in all ok naman naging trip and vacation namin. And pagkatapos nun hindi na namin sila inovertake-an. Since halos nasa paanan na sila naka-overtake sa van 😄
And opo, pasensya na po if more than 100kph speed ko sa tplex.

many provincial trucks follow unwritten rules of the road.

ganoon siguro kapag baguhan lang sa pagmamaneho at nasabak sa provincial trip like manila to baguio and back.
overtake ng overtake like there's no tomorrow. i remember 9 years ago when i had my chance to drive my uncle's nissan serena going to baguio. this was also my first time going out of town. kasama ko that time is my soon to be wife and her younger brother and sister. overtake din ako ng overtake that time without giving courtesy to other motorist whether alangin or bitin but that was 9 years ago. ngayon with our 7 year old daughter and a baby boy coming this march eh pinauuna ko na silang lahat, bahala na kayong mauna. oovertake na lang ako kapag talagang kinakailangan.

One unwritten safety check along the national road at the night is to flash your headlights once to check if the driver of the oncoming vehicle is awake... he should respond by blinking his, once, too. Bus and truck drivers do that every time...

Another unwritten rule for seasoned drivers is to turn off headlamps and leave fog lamps(lower beam) to allow the overtaking(signalling) vehicle to see if there's an oncoming vehicle. If you are the one overtaking, dim the headlamp until you pass the driver sidemirror of the other vehicle..

One advantage of night driving is that you can overtake on blind curves or eat the other lane safely by just turning off momentarily your headlamp.(not a recommended driving style for all but very effective).

Flashing once means the driver is checking if the oncoming vehicle forgot to dim the lights, or could be signalling that he wants to claim your right of way.. If the opposing vehicle already claimed your right of way, you have the last clear chance to safely maneuver your vehicle by:
    - decelerating to give much distance and give the other vehicle time to do his thing
    - use the shoulder to avoid collision
    - make full stop if necessary

PS: most newbie drivers driving provincial 2-way roads don't know that its very dangerous overtaking on bridges.. Having no shoulder lane on most bridges makes less option for last clear chance.. The reason also why 2-way bridges have double solid yellow lanes..

Another practice we follow during long drives is that when you're passing, and have safely passed and see the road is well clear ahead, keep your left signal light on to signal the vehicles behind that it's still safe to pass. If there is an oncoming vehicle already, signal right.

i switch to high beam twice (minimum) before approaching any curve sa mga mountain roads especially kung alam kong relatively high speed na blind curve. just to inform yung kasalubong na may oncoming traffic. low beam always kapag foggy ang conditions. walang kwenta ang mga malalakas na ilaw dahil magrereflect lamang sa iyo kapag mahamog sa mountain trail. imo, those "fog" lamps aren't really for road illumination but for identification with a little bit of corner illumination. sa katunayan, i've driven mountain roads on foggy nights with only stock headlights. the only modification lang na ginawa ko is ilower yung reach ng lights. kaya kahit ihigh beam ko, manageable pa rin sa mata ko yung glare ng sarili kong headlights.

Yeah, I get to practice this during these long drives, especially with a 2nd car in tow.

first time member dito, napa-register ako dahil sa thread na eto. I am a driver who goes up and down baguio via all three roads. maraming taon na ako nagmamaneho through these roads to the point na kabisadong-kabisado ko na, kayang kaya ko magmaneho through heavy rain and fog using my memory.

pero yang mga "unwritten rules" ninyo ay panay BS lang. there is no such thing as an "unwritten rule". bottomline, pinagbibigyan lang kayo ng other driver dahil sa kabulastugan ninyo.
