    eto ba yun?
    Smart Roadster

Smart cars are fun, and bought by people eager for a new take on motoring. Sports cars are also fun, and now these two ideas are fused together in the new Smart Roadster. It is the smallest sports car available in Europe.

There are two new Smart Roadster models, the simple Roadster and the Roadster-Coupe. The Roadster was shown in concept form at the 1999 Frankfurt Show, the Coupe a year later at Paris, and the production cars have changed very little from those concepts.

Many familiar Smart features are carried through to the new Roadsters, such as the smiling front air intake, the exposed 'Tridion' chassis structure that defines the sills and the roll-over bar, and the removable plastic panels which can be swapped for different ones if you want a colour change. But the architecture is clearly very different from a regular Smart, with a normal-looking bonnet, a low build and all four wheels the same size.

Mechanicals are surprisingly similar, including the three-cylinder turbocharged engine mounted across the rear wheels. It's more powerful now, though, with the top models, which the UK gets, delivering 82bhp from a capacity increased to 698cc. The lower-power version will only be offered as a limited edition left-hand drive. Steering, suspension, brakes, interior fittings and the sequential-shift two-pedal transmission are also very similar to those of existing Smarts.

As for me, I'll wait for Mazda's quote on the Miata. If Mazda wants 2.5m for one, then its gonna be a tough choice if you are really bent on having a roadster with the reassuring reliability (compared with an used one) of a brand new car.

Anyone know of any grey market importers that sell Smart Cars? I remember seeing one sold at JMM Motors near La Salle Taft.

I agree, a 2nd hand Evo would still be a more pallatable and "practical" choice.

That thing looks like I could break it.

If my memory serves me right, there was one more unit left at a grey market dealer in Banawe. It was colored silver-monotone.

    If I wanted a two-seat convertible:

Starts at Php 700,000 for the kit, just over 1million fully assembled with AC and radio, and enough power and grip to leave an EVO far far far behind.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
