i'm new here but i'm hoping you can help me out...
imagine: you have Php350k to buy a car, obviously you can only afford to buy 2nd hand. based on reliability, performance, looks, safety, comfort, resell value, availability of spare parts, whatever criteria applies, what car brand/model would you buy?
you cant go wrong with toyota corolla for its low maintenance and its abundance of parts. It is also a very reliable car.
Mitsubishi Lancer is also a good choice, comparable to a corolla in parts availability and low maintenance criteria.
Honda civic is another good choice, engine is quite good and theres a lot of aftermarket parts for it for pang-porma and performance effect. The downside is its expensive parts compared to the two brands mentioned above. Sometimes you can only avail it parts in casa which is quite expensive...
i find the 98-2000 corolla too small that's why I'm not a big fan of it (but I love the other corollas). If this will be a family car, it can be a big issue.
reliability, safety, resale value, availability of spare parts, Corolla 99.
Performance, Corolla 93 worth 180T with 170T worth of mods.
looks, MB 190E 1987, or an old Porsche 911.
You really need to know what your priorities are...is it a project car or a daily driver?

if you can get a civic, go grab one. though the parts are quite expensive, it will not fail you on the fuel efficiency part. plus, its driveability. its so easy to manuever. the ride is also great. plus a lot of after market parts available.
The car will be used almost daily. I just moved to Manila from the province and I need it to go from my apartment to the office.
I was eyeing the Lancer GLXI at first, but based on your input looks like the Corolla is a better alternative. I'd go for the Civic as well if I can find a good deal within my budget.
I appreciate everyone's comments, keep them coming!
admittedly Ford/Mazda cars (the Lynx is really a Mazda 323) are more maintenance-intensive than Toyota's. but the Lynx has lots of goodies and the parts, while more expensive than Toyota/Mitsu/Nissan, aren't as expensive as Honda's.
.. not to mention, i've *never* seen a Lynx taxi! (or a mazda 323 gen2 or gen2.5, pero maraming gen1 323 taxi -- yung box type).
