Local parts makers launch One-Brand project (Manila Times 9-28-07)
Local auto parts makers comprising the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP) recently launched a project called the One-Brand Project, in which MVPMAP members will pool their resources together to collectively market and sell their nonproprietary products under a common brand name to supply not only the local auto market but also the export market.
On the quality aspect, the end-users are assured that that they will get the same product quality for the products they buy as those supplied by MVPMAP members to the original equipment market or the car and truck assemblers.
The One-Brand Project is meant to cushion the impact of reduced production volumes during the last few years due to negative market factors. The Philippines still continues to import auto spare parts for the replacement market, even those parts that can be locally assembled.
The result is that most of our members are currently operating at only 40 percent of their rated plant capacities. Even worse, some have closed shops. Thus, the number of local auto parts makers has been reduced from 250 companies 10 years ago to only about 175 companies today. Considering that there are over 50,000 workers dependent on the local auto parts making industry, we have to do something fast to save the industry. We hope that this One-Brand Project, which will complement our own Philippine Utility Vehicle project, will provide the impetus for a revived market that will save 50,000 jobs,” Lee said.![]()
