Check your manual, naka indicate dun kung kelan gamitin at hindi. Depende sa gear mo.

Another good interpretation of the question. Perhaps, all automatic cars he used are the so called gated shifters as mentioned by *ParticleX.

It might be that he has been driving manual cars only and so he is not familiar to different configurations of automatic cars. For example, the shifter in BMW is confusing for me the first time.
