"Motor vehicle sales in the Philippines rose 12 percent from a year earlier to 63,699 units in the eight months to August, industry associations said Friday.
Passenger car sales were up 12 percent to 23,718, while commercial vehicle sales grew 11 percent to 39,981, said the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines and the Truck Manufacturers Association in a joint report.
Trucks, buses, vans and sport utility vehicles are all classified as "commercial vehicles" in the Philippines.
August sales alone grew 13 percent to 8,191, with car sales up 22 percent to 3,040 and commercial vehicle sales up eight percent to 5,151.
The release of new models and aggressive marketing efforts helped boost sales even as oil prices rose sharply, the two groups said.
They forecast full-year 2005 sales of 95,000 vehicles, up eight percent from last year.
"Overall sales are expected to increase in the coming months, with September a seasonally high sales month," they added."
