Ford debuts all-new Focus; Comes with all the toys you'll ever want
Words and photos by Christopher Kho

More than half a decade ago, Ford gave the Philippines a slice of Europe with the Focus. Ahead of its time, it gave us features we've never seen before on a P1 million compact such as dual-zone climate control, a turbo-diesel engine, and dual-clutch transmission, just to name a few. But through the years, the Focus started to show its age and was no longer at the alpha wolf of the pack. So to bring it back to the top of its game, Ford is doing one better by giving us the best the world has to offer in their next-generation compact. Look no further than the all-new 2012 Ford Focus.

I'd like to see how "Active Park Assist" will work in Manila where parking slots were designed by people who obviously don't drive cars. The ads on US TV looked pretty impressive:

In any case, it's still a nice-to-have feature in any car, in case you do find enough space between 2 parallel parked cars, and decide to let the Focus park itself while you write your text message, "I'm here. Just parking."

I think for now "MyFord Touch" is only offered in North American built Ford models.
It's their Ford SYNC technology that's going global.

Active Park Assist will search for a parking space that is at least 20% longer than the vehicle, if you have a Focus sedan for example, you will need a parking space that's around 3 feet longer than the car.
If it's less, I guess you'll have to park it yourself.

How about the Active City Stop? pede ba gamitin to sa stop and go traffic sa edsa? It seems this vehicle has the technology that it needs to drive itself. Was wondering how many years more for them to develop a logic that will able the vehicle to drive on its own during traffic.

Who cares how it works in those cities? Problema na ng mga European yan. If Ford can make it work in the Ph, that's good enough for me.

With all due respect to Mr. Kho, the all-new Focus does NOT come with all the toys *I'll* ever want. Not while Ford continues to withold the TDCi variant from the Philippine market.

The cockpit in particular has a lot of flashy bits, especially the high-end variants. I just wonder how long the finish on those will last under the sweaty hands test.

Active stop is not a replacement for attentiveness. it cannot respond immediately to quickly moving objects, but it does help.

Supposedly, the 1 liter Ecoboost will go into the gasoline Focus. No word on whether that one is coming here, but it would be sweet.

I'd prefer a Focus without Active Park Assist or even Active Stop, but has a good HU that won't need to be replaced anymore, full power amenities, and of course, a diesel engine. I prefer to have the basics covered than to have fancy toys I won't even get to use in day-to-day operations.

Too bad the Ford Focus will only come with a gasoline engine. I prefer to have the start-stop engine feature when you press down on the brakes.

The same happened with Toyota's Fortuner before. The agents we talked to were very arrogant. It was as if we were supposed to "beg" for a unit, apart from saying yes to: a. in-house financing, b. in-house insurance & c. in-house accessories. We walked away, of course, then went with a Nissan offering instead. The funny thing was, one of the agents we talked to was actually present when our unit was released because apparently, he was friends with our agent from Nissan. He couldn't even look at us. Not only did we get a better deal, we also got a much better ride. 👍

Yeah, its a bit higher than I expected, I was expecting it to start at less than P850K, the actual price for the base 1.6 Ambiente MT model is P859K, at least they gave it dual airbags.

I do wish they add a MT version for the Trend trim which has moved a bit more upmarket.
