Assembly of the all-new Mazda 3, known as the Axela in other markets, has finally commenced in Thailand and Malaysia, two years after the model was first built in Japan, Colombia and South Africa.

Production in Thailand, where the Mazda 2 subcompact and the BT-50 pickup truck are also a hit, started on February 28.

Malaysia, on the other hand, started selling Mazda 3 units made by Inokom Corporation today. Mazda used to import the 3 from Japan.

"Originally launched in 2003, the Mazda3 has become one of our core products. Today, it represents the Mazda brand in over one hundred countries and regions, and with annual sales of 440,000 units, it comprises roughly one third of all Mazda vehicle sales," said Yuji Nakamine, Mazda's managing executive officer in charge of overseas sales. "Winning over 120 global awards, the Mazda3 has gained worldwide recognition for its stylish design, sporty driving dynamics, and excellent environmental performance."

Now that the all-new Mazda 3 is now produced in Thailand and with Ford's confirmation that the new Focus will be built there starting next year, does it mean the death knell for Ford Philippines' Sta. Rosa plant is now sounding?

The answer is no--or at least not yet--according to Anika Salceda, Ford Group Philippines' assistant vice president for corporate communications.
"The announcement has no effect on our current operations here in the Philippines," Salceda said.

So what's left? The Escape... That will be replaced by the Vertrek and I assume it will also be produced in Thailand... Another manufacturer waves goodbye, this manufacturer was an exporter pa naman... Sad day for Philippine manufacturing but that's life...

Don't know about Mazda but if you base it on Ford's pricing of the Fiesta line, then no. Very competitive pa rin ang pricing ng Fiesta kahit na CBU.

Panong di mag sasara, eh konte lang naman bumibili ng ford products dito sa Pinas. wala kang maririnig kundi sirain or mahal ang pyesa tapos resale value ang baba compared sa rivals from other makes.... Might as well make it in a market where it sells well, tipid pa sa shipping costs..

They should make the fiesta here, since our market likes small cars leave the ranger to the thai's they're the 3rd biggest pick-up market anyway... Atleast if made dito yung fiesta mas sure ang build quality.

That's the problem with some other people even though they don't experience yet having one Ford cars they tell so many negative things. For me, I am happy and contented with my Ford Everest and I don’t mind what negative things they say.
It is really sad to hear that another Philippine car manufacturer will said goodbye...

Di na kelangan, aalis na nga eh... Truthfully I'd rather stake my money on philippine build quality rather than thai..

Sad and we have to face the reality. Mahina talaga ng car sales dito compared to other asean neighbors. Assemble it here then shipping it out plus lack of our government support would mean more cost for ford

Ford's Sta. Rosa Plant has no future
