Guys, just curious: how do food companies test how long their products can last before going bad? Yung BFAD bang bahala magtest? Yung mga nasisira agad malamang they can test it in a lab for a few days...but how about food that lasts years?

generally speaking, pag best before, pwede mo pa kainin after. but the quality is not at its best already. pag expiry, sira na, bawal na kainin.

to determine the expiry date, usually the QA department of the manufacturer will make a shelf life test.

i hear that for some products, the actual expiration is months pa after the indicated date; naninigurado lang siguro.

But i'm curious as to how food companies determine/test the best before/expiration date...alangan naman hayaan na lang magkaamag ^_^

pag best before, your statement is true na pwede pa siya months after. but for how long, we can only speculate.

regarding test, what manufacturers usually do is during r&d, madami na sila ginagawa. then tinatabi nila yung mga samples and they eat it everyday. pag nag deteriorate na quality, best before na agad.

That's what former DTI Usec Maglaya had mentioned in ANC before, that goods are still good one month after exp date.

Pero mahirap na. Sundin na lang yung bbd. Minsan kasi may mga canned goods, na malapit pa lang sa BBD, bloated na yung lata.

I am not finicky with best before or expiration date. I still eat it depending on the product eg chips or chocolates. Pag canned goods hindi na.

I heard even medicines can be taken X months after expiration. The effectivity is lessened lang.

QA and R&D assures that the BBD is safe. But hindi pa nga sira yan, meron pa din buffer just to be sure, mga 1 month usually. Pero don't take chance na siyempre.

Nestle keeps a product of every batch in room temperature, and warm room usually for 15 months.

yung mga opismeyts kong noong food tech, sila magcoconduct ng tests kung hanggang kelan magtatagal yung food, que exposed or in any kind of packaging.

The methods for measuring shelf-life is different across different kinds and types of products. But the majority of products are affected one way or the other by temperature. That is how they estimate Best Before or Expiry Dates.

Notice that for most of these products, they have an indication about how it should be stored. Ex. Store at room temperature, or refrigerated, or away from direct sunlight, etc. They can accelerate the spoilage process by subjecting it to different temps and use the results to approximate the expiration date based on how a consumer typically store the product or base it under the assumption that the consumer followed the instruction on the proper way to store the product.

Simply put, they can't wait three or five years to determine how their product would turn out. They may still do this method but only AFTER the product has been out on the market for maybe months/years. They would then use these results to adjust the dates on the new batches accordingly.

Pag gusto niyo tumagal ang product, lagay niyo lang sa freezer, kahit 1-2 years lampas expiration okay pa =))
