    "Soda ban in schools backed
By Sheila Crisostomo (The Philippine Star) | Updated March 4, 2014 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) yesterday supported calls to ban soda and other sugar-laden drinks in schools to fight obesity, diabetes and hypertension.
PCP vice president Anthony Leachon said these illnesses are caused by high intake of sugar and calories, which are the main composition of soda.
Leachon noted that children should not be exposed to soda at a young age because of its ill-effects on their health.
“There are five million obese, 27 million overweight and seven million diabetic Filipinos. By banning soda and other sweet drinks in schools, these figures will be reduced eventually,” he added.
He said the PCP supports 10-year-old Daniel “Chip” Gatmaytan who has been campaigning to ban soda.
Representatives Leni Robredo of Camarines Sur and Arlene Bag-ao of Dinagat Islands have filed House Bill 4021 or the proposed Healthy Beverage Options to push Gatmaytan’s advocacy.
The bill seeks to prohibit the sale in schools of soft drinks, sports drinks, iced tea and fruit-based drinks that contain less than 50 percent real fruit juice or that contain additional sweeteners as well as drinks containing caffeine, excluding low-fat or fat-free chocolate milk.
Beverages that contain at least 50 percent fruit juice and do not contain additional sweeteners; low-fat or fat-free milk, including chocolate milk, soy milk, rice milk and other dairy and non-dairy calcium-fortified milks are allowed to be sold in schools."

Does this cover powdered fruit drinks that are 'ARTIFICIALLY SWEETENED" sold as good for 1 liter sachets and heavily advertised as "baon packs". Or the bigger 500 grams pack (also artificially sweetned with Aspartame) sold in markets as "Palamig" packs. Or other 'SWEETENED (ARTIFICIALLY THOUGH) POWDERED thirst quenchers?

Matagal nang bawal soda sa madaming mga private schools.
Pero meron "juice" drinks sa tetra pack, iced tea, gator ade, mogu-mogu, sagot gulaman, etc. Dapat milk and real juices lang like buko and kalamansi ang meron kung talagang seryoso sila dyan.

    Meh.

Even fruit juices that are made from mostly real fruit... if they contain additional refined sugar (or even cane sugar)... should be banned. They're all too sweet.

But by that point, there will be nothing in the canteen. ... maybe better to institute a calorie per 100ml limit.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Just checked out some leading "dairy based "chocolate drinks brand in grocery shelf, eh puro may added sugar din naman. Even the imported soy milk has added sugar. Same goes for the locally manufactured milk drink. Tubig na lang talaga dapat inumin, just like the good old times...

When these so called doctors were young during their school days, they were drinking Chocovim, Apple Sidra, Canada Dry, Barley etc...but then during those days the natural built was either thin or slim. Look at the pictures of athletes in the 70s until mid 80s, PBA or NBA puro payat pa. Parents then will feed you all the vitamins para tumaba and maging healthy daw yet we eat then 5-6 times a day (breakfast, mirienda , lunch , mirienda, dinner and sometimes midnight snack). But now, kahit mga taong nagrereklamong naghihirap o 2-3 beses lang kumain isang araw eh malulusog din.

So, is it really sugar that is the problem or it's the type & quality of food that's available now?

supposedly, problems resulting from consumption of fats and other 'poison' from processed food get multiplied by problems cause by artificial sugar (_ose's). a bad combo like traffic and mmda/ltfrb.

then you double the serving size and the frequency of meals/day...

they should've banned it years ago

my cousin mentioned a staple of bread they had back then in the 70's. the nutribun? ring a bell?

if they read the ingredients, as long as there is an ~ose in the name of an ingredient (glucose, fructose, etc..) definitely it is a chemically added sweetener for preserving and flavorihg purposes. a good rule of thumb is if you can't pronounce the ingredient in it, don't drink it.
