GL4 is used for manual tranny rear wheel drives if i'm not mistaken since it does not weaken the cone synchronizers which are made of a softer (bronze like material). The GL5 does not necessarily mean that it is of a higher rating - it just has a different application.

Yes that is correct. GL-5 doesnt exactly mean higher spec than GL-4. for manual trannies with synchro use GL-4. GL-5 is made for rear axles/differentials and should not be used for manual trannies unless otherwise specified. there is actually no test method procedure for GL-4 oils. Only GL-5 has the test. GL-4 oil means it has 50% lesser additives than GL-5

Just use whatever is stated in your car's manual.

For my ride, the manual transmission and front differential can either use a SAE 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil.

For the transfer case & rear differential, it requires SAE 90 GL-5... had a hard time finding where to purchase this... found one finally (Valvoline) in Ace Greenhills.

I use Castrol LSX 90 API GL-5 for my rear diff. its Limited slip diff compatible as well. i get it from ace hardware din.

there are oils that are gl4/5 compatible.
