Hi Sirs,

Just finished my 70k PMS and my service supervisor informed me that my car’s engine wire harness was chewed by rodents, the given estimate to replace the damaged wires is 55k!!

Can you me please recommend any alternate solutions, the wire is not yet cut-off, only the outer part was damaged by the mice.

My car is Mazda 3 2015 sky active

Are we talking of chewed ignition circuit wire insulation? No CELs & misfires, I assume? If so, it might still be salvageable. The Skyactiv's ignition coil wires can be freed from the connector w/o cuts. Look at 2nd pic below. This way, you can retape & shrink wrap each to finish em like stock before reattaching the wires to the coil. It won't take an hour of dealership tech's time. Have all other wires & cables checked thoroughly. Hopefully, you won't need to replace anything. On rodents....Is your car garaged? I've found Racumin Blocks to be effective at ridding em....but don't put these in your engine bay, but on corners & areas where they hide or pass. Must taste great coz they'd keep going back.

Once gone, you may hook up some ultrasonic rodent repellent near the car's front end or in it. They're probably more placebo than anything, but who knows?
Cats, you might ask? They'll pose another problem. You'll invite scratches on your bonnet & roof.[emoji17]
Here are some proven preventive tips...Constantly enjoy your 3. You make keep the Mazda engine cover off. Check & clean your engine bay & garage frequently. Clear the clutter around so they won't have hiding places. And oh, prayers do work![emoji120]
Hopefully with these measures, your car won't become their favorite refuge, or worse.... maternity ward. Good luck, sir!

No engine misfire or any irregularities Sir, the service supervisor also provided me a list of possible symptoms caused by the chewed wiring harness, but I’ve experienced none of it.

My dealer is in Alabang, they told me that repair is out of the option and the only offer that they can give me is a replacement of the whole wiring harness
thou one of their crew wrapped the damaged wires with some eletric tape.

Ahhh...With no misfire, wires are still conducting well. Hopefully, no cut wires, no soldering needed. Just properly reinsulate them.
Step 1. Unplug the connector(BLUE) for the ignition coil.
Step 2. Disengage/Release each pin of each affected wire(RED) individually from the coil connector.
Step 3. Tape the chafed wire insulation individually.
Step 4. Sleeve a shrink wrap over each bundle of individually taped wires. This will add protection & restore the OE look.
That's pretty much it.

Call PeligRacing +639152894590 if no dealership will do this repair for you. I have seen this procedure done w/o issues.

^Looks like some of the stranded wire has been cut..thats awfully dangerous..cutted strands means that wire can handle less current or overheat melt those insulation and stall your car or worse smoke your whole engine bay

If you believe those shrink wrap can connect those cut strands without soldering then GOODLUCK

Pic isn't clear. Never said shrink wrap would restore strands cut.
The Skyactiv uses individual coil, not a coil pack. Those thin wires are pre-coil. If he's lucky, like the few I've seen, only the insulation of those are chewed & no soldering would be necessary.
I'm just sharing solution options from experience, sir, not disputing the safest route would be a pricey new harness...hence, the suggestion for PeligRacing to have an actual look at it.

If this were a different car w/ the coil pack, the chewed insulation would already be causing you much trouble. CELs & misfires.

ours is not a coilpack wiring (the ones with wrapped spiral core wire). these are normal stranded wires. chewed up harnesses are not honored by insurance from experience. this is recoverable. that tape job is fugly tho.

perhaps it is included in the usual comprehensive insurance without acts of nature.
acts of nature events refer to natural disasters or catastrophies, but to rat bites on individual components of a car...?? UNLESS! your neighborhood was invaded by an army of rats and every car therein had their wirings chewed off...

file it under "malicious mischief". does insurance mention, that to be qualified, the perpetrator should be a human? heh heh.

but it can be repaired.
any electronics aficionado worthy of his soldering gun, can repair those, po.
show it to a radio-tv repairman, or an aficionado.
tiyaga lang po yan.
no secrets.

btw,
we top off the repair, by knotting some strong string (pang-ganchillo) around the tape, to prevent loosening of the tape over time.
shrink wrap also works, but i am wary of the engine heat's long-term effect on it.

Just ask your insurance provider. Mine covers animal damages as part of acts of nature. Thankfully i havent claimed this coverage but im a 1000% sure my insurance covers this
