Anyone here in this line of business? Ok kayang business ito. I've noticed maraming mga third-party (not directly under any hospital) patient transport services nowadays (e.g. Ace-Cor, Aeromed, Lifeline Arrows, Lifeguard, etc.) and got me wondering on the viability of the business.

For one, not all hospitals have their own ambulances. Even a hospital as big as UST only has two and with no permanent crew (they 'borrow' the doctor and nurses from different departments during ambulance conductions).

And from the price list at UST, malaki ang bayad per trip. hehehe.

How much are basic ambulances nowadays?

Some things you may want to research on:
    - cost per trip
    - figures on how many people avail of the services on a daily basis
    - tie-ups with hospitals, medical centers, Health Service provides, etc...
    - vehicle maintainance, wear and tear, etc....
    - licenses/permits needed
    - average pay/overhead for manpower.

Otep, why not start with your MB100?

Some months ago, my grandmother had an accident at home around 2 AM and broke her pelvis. We called the nearest hospital to ask for an ambulance, the receptionist said: "Pwede po ba kayong maghintay ng 10 minutes? Gigisingin pa po namin yung driver eh."

We called another hospital and the receptionist there said naman: "Sandali lang po, susunduin pa namin yung driver sa bahay nila".

Eventually, an ambulance arrived after 45 minutes!

If this was a life-threatening medical emergency, the patient would have died.

If you want to be on the ambulance business, as in "ambulance" by the word itself, then you must be ready-to-go as soon as you are called. Otherwise, you are just a vehicle-for-hire.

    BoyFerrari,

If you need an ambulance in an 'emergency/rescue' situation call 16-911 or 117 or other third party ambulance services which offer emergency/rescue services like the Lifeline Arrows. Don't call the hospital directly as hospital ambulances are not oriented for that kind of work (though, they have been wrongly pictured as such in the TV, movies, etc.).

Hospital ambulances usually conduct FROM the base hospital instead of TO the base hospital (e.g. patient going home, hospital transfer).

    Caloyski5,
Medyo iba ang structure ng Lifeline, para silang complete package not only ambulances and patient transport. May rescue equipment sila and sariling medical facilites. Ang target ko lang naman is the patient transport side. Per trip ang bayad.

***teka, tinatawag na ko ng bossing. To be continued***

Is this an ANOMALY of hospitals in the Philippines? If hospital ambulances only transfer "hospital-to-hospital" , is it acceptable to have the only authorized ambulance driver to stay at home SLEEPING and only be called up when needed? Surely, you don't mean "emergency" transfers FROM the hospital rarely happens.

It's like summoning firemen from their homes to come to the fire station just in case someone reported a fire.

No that is not an anomaly. That is how it really works. That's why you have to call the rescue/emergency people first instead of calling the hospital directly. Hospital ambulances are in charge of patient management once they have been extricated from the scene. None of our personnel are officially trained for rescue work. Even in the U.S., you call 911 first instead of the hospital. Then they will send a government rescue unit or one of their accredited third-party units.

This is the reason you rarely see hospital ambulances responding to on-site emergencies, those things are usually handled by rescue organizations which have their own patient transport.

Yes, emergency transfers are VERY VERY rare. Because we at the hospital have to stabilize the patient (therefore no longer becoming an emergency) before transferring unless we are transferring the patient because the relatives wish for him to expire at home at home or somewhere away from the hospital (DAMA/HAMA).

But our drivers are trained to respond should an emergency occur en route to wherever they are going.

    Ski Jerze,
All UST ambulance conductions have at least one physician on board and have emergency nurses on board. Other ambulance companies have a similar set up while others use Paramedics and EMT's along with physicians since they also cover on-site rescues. IMHO, our nurses are better than the EMT's and paramedics when it comes to actual transport though by not a very wide margin.
