In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. (AFFI) will launch a book on entrepreneurship and franchising entitled Introduction to Entrepreneurship. The book will be launched during AFFI's 7th Franchise Show at the Megatrade Hall of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City on July 6, 2007.
This book is actually meant to be a textbook and highlights the success and experiences of fifteen AFFI members who have blazed a trail for others to follow. This could be a reference book for college students and a source of inspiration for budding entrepreneurs. It propositions that to succeed as a franchisee, it does not take a lot of capital, just the right product, a creative imagination, passion and a lot of hard work.
"We decided on a book on entrepreneurship because in today's age of rapid technological growth, it is very easy to start a small or even medium sized business, such that while nobody was looking, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) took over the reins of the country's economy. According to the DTI website, the SME sector has become the backbone of the Philippine economy. It comprises a staggering 99.6% of all registered firms nationwide, employs 69.9% of the labor force and contributes 32% to the economy", says AFFI President Ricardo Cuna of Fiorgelato.
"And SMEs have government support through RA 9178, otherwise known as the Barangay Micro Business Enterprise (BMBE) Act of 2002, providing various benefits and incentives to entrepreneurs. This has resulted in higher business performance for SME companies as measured by their assets, employment and sales. Prime examples of these success stories are the fifteen AFFI members featured in this book", adds Mr. Cuna.
In the entrepreneurial world, the book focuses on franchisers and takes the extra mile to discuss not just the businesses of the fifteen featured franchisers but also the significant events in their life that built the strong foundation of their business success. Its thesis is that entrepreneurs are never born overnight. The book clearly shows how the foundation and groundwork for entrepreneurship is laid one by one through all their life experiences.
AFFI Director Rommel Juan of Binalot explains that "franchisers are a different breed of entrepreneurs; their chosen route to business expansion is tougher. Their constant basic challenge is the ability to deal with business partners and not just employees. What adds to this challenge is that the franchisees are themselves entrepreneurs and there is a natural tendency that like poles repel. Thus, a franchisor needs a paradigm shift and a different perspective altogether".
"For the past ten years, AFFI has been advocating responsible franchising. We are encouraging our members to take the more difficult path of making sure their franchisees are provided assistance and support for them to achieve financial viability in their franchise business. This definitely means more expenses and manpower for the franchisor but this is responsible franchising. And this is the only way a franchise system can withstand the test of time and even outlive its founders", says AFFI Chairman Pacita Juan of Figaro.
"This is the reason for AFFI's advocacy for responsible franchising and this book is one of the tools it sees to further its advocacy. We at AFFI believe that the Philippine economy shall continue to reap the benefits of franchising when franchisers take the path of responsible franchising", she concludes.
