Are you evaluating monopolies in general or a specific case (i.e. Microsoft's OS monopoly?)

For the consumers, they're not bothered by their software environment, which could translate to less in terms of quantity, and to more in terms of focus on training.

Also, third party software companies will do their development on only one platform.

Consumers then will not be burdened in marrying their various applications, necessating conversion and translation/interface softwares. This is the biggest headache, specially since departments and divisions will have their personal preferences on what's available out there.

I am though, still for competition.

In my opinion, aside from the obvious, the main advantage in having a monopoly in a certain business sector is that resources are not wasted unnecessarily. In Windows OS' case, the main advantage for me is very efficient communications. Here are some examples...

    1) For software makers, they can focus on developing various programs that will work in a single type of OS. Because of this, they will be able to make their programs very efficient and concentrate most of their resources towards one direction.

    2) For businesses and governments, they will not worry that their systems might be incompatible with each other.

    3) For consumers and end users, after mastering Windows OS, learning other Windows based applications will be easier.

I think you can find many more solutions from here. Hope this helps a bit in your school paper.

In terms of development, effect would depend on the policy of the management...

SInce there is no competition, management have the option to make it stagnant (as the profit influx will be there no matter what). Howver, if they are committed to development, R&D have much better focus as they are working on a single platform and no external pressure involved.
