im being offered an early promotion after just 2 months..gagawin akong supervisor ng mga clinic assistants sa isang research company here in toronto.

but I really want to start this september sa school. I applied sa different colleges in their nursing program. the problem is...sobrang late nako nag apply at halos lahat ng inapplyan ko eh puno na...I am just waiting for the reply of one more college....sana makapasok.

on the other hand...ang ganda ng opportunity na binigay sakin ng company...sobrang tempting as of NOW. iniisip ko rin ang future ko and being a nurse will surely make my future secure lalo na dito...

I have my own plans...but i just want to hear from you wise people of what you think.

    thanks.

Depende. If you need the cash now, go for the job, otherwise school.

Kita ng pera ang job. Gastos ang school, or rather....investment for more lucative job later.

This is a fact I gleaned from trends in the business/financial industry (which may or may not apply to your respective industry). I think its best to keep on working now until the inevitable "restructuring" occurs during down turns. Newspapers have reported an increase in MBA enrollment during recession years of 2001-2003 in the US.

right now, there is a very big demand on nurses here in canada and the us. thats why i think, hindi naman ako mauubusan ng trabaho. pero nauubusan ako ng schools dahil sobrang late ko na nag apply.

and honestly...i am having this life crisis na gusto ko nang maabot agad ang pangarap ko sa medical field. i started in medschool in the philippines..but never had the chance to finish it becasue we migrated here.

sobrang naguguluhan lang talaga ako sa ngayon...

    fafa glenn,

i think what you need to look at are these:

    1. does the job offer more advancements in the future? or will it ultimately turn out to be a dead end job, short of your life goals?

    2. do those future advancements require further education/degree or just experience? if it requires more education will you be able to attend further college later, keeping the job at the same time?

    3. if, as you say, it sets your career path in another direction, does it present opportunities where you will be able to achieve what you innitially set out for? are your life goals still within sight if you take this path?

    4. last but not least, will you be happy with it? especially if let's say you get stuck later on?

nice to hear from you ninong yebo.
    1. it will turn out to be a dead end job. supervisorial job kasi siya. handling 7-8 people in clinic logistics and it also requires storage jobs.

    2.no.

3.IMMIDIATE life goals, yes. long term, no. since i am just starting here, napakagandang opportunity para sakin. pero pagtagal...pag plano ko na magkapamilya, i dont think it will be enough.

4.right NOW, i am happy. getting stuck to it later on....i dont know just yet.

why are you giving up on your chosen career as a MD anyway? you give that up now and 40 years later you will be thinking what could have been if you kept to your chosen path. kala ko sabi mo nun e uuwi ka din ng pinas to finish your studies? you make the choice, do not let life make it for you.

ninong...mas inisip ko mas magiging ok kung dito ako mag nurse kesa mag md sa pinas. mas pinili ko maging practical ngayon since parents ko parin magpapaaral sakin. eh nandito rin sila. pangarap ko rin naman ang nurse..pero hindi sa pinas.you know what i mean...

diba pwede i part time mo na lang yung work and part time school, ganun ginagawa ng sister ko eh, nabibili pa rin niya mga gusto niya while not sacrificing her time for her studies. Yan din ang isa mo pang kalaban eh, yung "time".

    Glenn,

Think of what you want to become/where you want to be in 20 years. Will this job help you achieve that goal? (i read from your reply to yebo's post na hinde)

I can somewhat relate to your sitaution, I left a very good-paying job in the phils to come here to korea to study my masters. In hindsight, there are times when I imagine what I could be earning and where in the corporate ladder I could be right now. But then again I think of the countless opportunities that will(hopefully) open up for me once this is done, and the exposure Im getting, and I am glad I made this decision.
Take note: medyo disappointed ako sa program dito but Ive decided to finish it anyway, mas sayang kasi and opportunity na to. We arent getting any younger, and its best to settle these things while we have the time. Especially you, youre still young, you can still afford to take a chance.

Working, may turn out to be a trap you will have trouble escaping later on, especially if the pay is good and youre comfortable with what you do- its not easy to walk away from a good salary in exchange for the life of a student once again. You may end up settling for it, instead of chasing after your dreams. I may sound like an idealist, and maybe some part of me is, but I just want to end up doing what I want to do. I believe you should do the same, it may be a cliche, but, love your work, follow your dream because one day you're gonna wake up and youll be 40, and youll ask yourself why you didnt take the chance when you were younger.

Let me share one thing, my mother who is an MD, graduated from nursing last semester and has passed her CGFNS and NCLEX. Im sure a lot of you have heard this happening all over the country, doctors studying to become nurses. Shes 50+ and yet she still left her practice and went through all the trouble to become a nurse, because she sees it as an excellent opportunity for us as a family. I'm just saying this to let you know that the nursing field is an excellent opportunity for you but it will not be around forever. Like in the early 90s, PT was the "in" thing, who knows how long this demand for nurses would last? Strike while the iron is hot my friend.

Okay, this is starting to sound dramatic na, those are my .02

just adding my $0.02 worth of opinion.

but I really want to start this september sa school. I applied sa different colleges in their nursing program. the problem is...sobrang late nako nag apply at halos lahat ng inapplyan ko eh puno na...I am just waiting for the reply of one more college....sana makapasok.
does this mean that all your hopes are hanging on the reply of this last college?
do you think there's a high chance for you to get accepted there?

why not get the job; save some money for school; then apply earlier next term/school year?

i know its one more year of waiting to get back on track to your career goal pero sabi mo nga sa original post mo late ka na kasi nag-apply.

    School nalang muna.

Just imagine what this company offers you even though you're not yet finished studying. What more kung tapos ka na? You might even get better jobs/offers than that. Iba parin ang tapos lalo sa field mo na yan. Kung tapos ka na, you can get CGFNS and even broaden your chances of getting a better job.

Don't hurry too much about achieving your dreams, you'll achieve them even faster with better education.

Di naman issue ang $$$ sa inyo e. So you'll be better of going to school muna.

    Just my 2.

hey Glenn...i was in the same boat as you 6 years ago. i wanted to go get my MBA but my boss offered me a promotion and a rather large raise to stay. it was very tempting because i was going to put myself through school and the extra money would be very helpful. but the promotion offered was also a dead end (but high paying) job, and really not what i loved to do. i didn't want to stay stagnant for 1-2 more years just to make more money, and i was told that i probably couldn't defer my acceptance to the MBA school, so mawawala yung spot ko.

i decided to turn him down to pursue my dream. life was tough for the 2 years of B-school, but today i make 3 times what he offered doing something i love, and my future opportunities look quite good.

imo, time is the most important resource we have, my friend. it's more important than money. if your heart is in nursing, and you are financially, emotionally, and mentally ready, then that's where you should be.

kung mag-aaral ka,full time ba un?or magwork ka parin dun sa clinic?

kung naguguluhan ka,iset mo mabuti priorities mo..pero since sabi mo na dead end na yang job na yan, kahit na malaki sweldo, kung ako pipiliin ko nalang mag aral..at least pagkagraduate mo,makakahanap ka pa ng mas maganda..just take it one step at a time my friend, i know u can achieve whatever you want as long as you put your heart to it..

    kukulitin kita ehehehehe!

ako nung june 1990 may na-offer sa akin na job as analyst sa isang finance company (PDCP), kasama sa package ang pag-finance nila ng MBA sa AIM. work ako sa kanila 8-3, study ako afternoon and night. kumpleto sweldo saka sagot nila lahat ng gastos sa MBA ko. tapos na lahat ng company exams, interviews, panel interview, medical, pasok na din sa AIM, etc... pero, gaya ng sabi ko kanina sa previous post, gusto ko dapat happy ako sa job na gagawin ko. i just could not see myself pushing a pen for the rest of my life! iniisip ko pa lang bored na ko. ang gusto ko talaga mag-work sa oilfield and travel, college pa yun na talaga. so pipirma na lang ako ng contract, and i mean hawak ko na ang contract and pen with the company senior VP and HR manager sitting in front of me, nagbago isip ko. i stopped before the pen could touch paper, silent for about 1 minute, then i stood up, told them i will not be happy doing that job, thanked them for their time and i left. almost 1 year na ako jobless before that and was jobless for almost another 1 year after. i landed a job in the oilfield as a trainee march the next year and eto ako ngayon, 15 years ang going sa oilfield.

sabi nga sa lumang commercial, "kung san ka masaya to suportahan ta ka!" so you want to be a nurse then study to be a nurse! paluin na kita dyan e!

M2: maganda opportunities ng nurses dito sa NA. madaming specialties so you can continually reinvent yourself, and the top nurses (Nurse Practitioner yata ang title) basically have the same skills and basic medical abilities as a general practitioner MD.

there's no denying that it's a tough job though. day after day you're (literally) elbow-deep in ****. pero at least madami kang pwedeng manyakin na fellow nurses, techs and staff

uy, ganda ng offer sa yo ah! it takes a lot of conviction to stand up and walk away from something like that.

    sincerely,
    the pen pusher
