My bro in law is planning to visit from the US and is wondering which map should he use. He's aware that OSM and Roadguide are free but concerned about accuracy in the provinces, esp when he plans some sightseeing. NAVTEQ is available from Garmin's website at USD99.99, and it includes maps for other Southeast Asian countries. But again, cocerns about accuracy arise.
To those who've used these maps, what would you recommend? I'm currently using Roadguide and OSM and have noted some incaccuracies in street names. I can't comment on NAVTEQ since I dont have it in my device. Thanks.
im using both roadguide.ph and OSM.. unfortunately for me im not a 'contributor' status on roadguide so i dont have the latest map to check as of now.
but i have one of the contributor maps with roadguide but i think its almost 2 years old... so im assuming there are lots of updates that i dont have.
OSM maps are always free.. but not that updated around once a month?
both maps are well tested on some of the following roads that i have tested...
north going to clark pampanga / subic
north going to bulacan
south going to tagaytay / batangas
within metro manila - makati / paranaque / las pinas / pasay / QC / cainta
mostly main roads are very accurate as far as my needs are.
one thing.... following the map is not that good though.. best is know where you are going.. then know the roads that needed to take going there.. then track thru GPS.
many issues encountered are roads that were already closed / changed / etc..
OSM is updated daily if you want to download the daily updates...
if the map is wrong, you can correct it yourself then download the updated map the following day or after 2 days...
check out routing of roadguide vs OSM... particularly in Makati and QC :P
for now, suggest you use both RG and OSM...and before hitting the road, check the best route first and don't depend too much on your GPS, you can simulate the route too before going
Buy also a road map, preferably the latest edition available.
Navteq only shows the major roads and not as updated as roadguide and OSM.
To make your route planning easy, buy a Garmin with multi-point routing capability.
Thanks for all the inputs. My bayaw already has a Nuvi, and based on all the comments, he's thinking of downloading OSM because although both RG and OSM are free, he's worried that the demo map from RG won't be as updated as the latest from OSM. Di naman siya maka-attain ng contributor status sa RG coz he's US based and therefore unable to send updated Phil. waypoints, tracks and other info to qualify for a contributor's map.
i'm using OSM on garmin nuvi 1300 but i don't use it for myself, mostly for my direction-challenged wifey :P
please try to update OSM by contributing or if not point out the error on OpenStreetBugs - Help us to improve OpenStreetMap
try to join OSM mapping parties, there's an upcoming one tomorrow, i think, for pateros areas
Have Garmin1360 with navteq nt2011.10 map. As compared sa roadguide map, mas accurate young street names nya. Mas maraming coverage at poi young roadguide but I like routing of navteq better. There's also junction view for some intersections. Unfortunately limited ang updates ng map sa Garmin Singapore. So after the free updates you'll have to go back to roadguide or buy a NT Southeast Asia na updated. Sanaa pag dami bumili magkaroon ng lifetime updates like in US.
