Getz wins fuel challenge (UK, 2006)

In GreenFleet’s Capital Fuel Challenge, the Hyundai Getz 1.5 CRDi turbodiesel won first place for the private sector category, beating a Toyota Prius 1.6 petrol hybrid which got 2nd place as well as a Volkswagen Caddy 1.9 TDi turbodiesel which ended up third.


The test was conducted in London traffic, with speeds averaging from 5 to 10 mph, yup - this isn’t a highway test. City traffic only. The Getz managed to get 45.15 mpg, while the Prius only got 32.43 mpg. The third place Caddy managed 36.53 mpg, better than the Prius, but it lost the 2nd place to the Prius because Prius emissions were slightly lower - 201.85 CO2 g/km versus 204.31 CO2 g/km for the Caddy.

In the public sector category, there was a Prius which managed 45.71 mpg, as opposed to the 32.43 mpg for the Prius in the private sector category - this shows that Prius fuel efficiency is highly dependant on external factors - perhaps the driver in this case. Still, 45.71 mpg in the best performing Prius is only slightly better than the Getz’s 45.15 mpg.

Perhaps hybrids are overrated after all.

Driver Influence
The other variations between cars are likely to be mainly down to the driver. The cars all averaged a speed of between 5 and 10 mph over the course, which retrospectively is quite good in London traffic. The cars will obviously all be slightly different due to so many varying factors in their build but the biggest factor will be how hard the driver has been on the throttle. This just re-iterates the careful driving emphasis on good fuel economy!

Note:

Prius at 45.71 mpg (imperial) = 16 km/l (5-10 mph traffic)

Getz at 45.15 mpg (imperial) = 15.8 km/l (5-10 mph traffic)

CRDi will kill hybrids. hehe

Hybrids: very expensive, not that phenomenal a mileage.

CRDi: cheap, high torque, hybrid mileage levels.

ergo, CRDi is the way to go.

I just wish Hyundai put Sequential Bi-Turbo on the next CRDi Santa Fe already. Think BMW 535d power :D

Sorry, I didn't have time to space the tables for the forums, but the numbers in bold are emissions. Basically, only one hybrid got better emissions scores than the Getz.

Basically, emissions are a direct function of fuel economy. The less fuel you use, the less emissions you produce.

The exception to this rule is the lean-burn method (fuel-stratified injection in Audi-speak... but old Honda engines also used lean-burn)... as lean burn produces NOx.

Thus, a "dirty" diesel with good particulate filters (to remove everything else) will still produce similar or better emissions than a petrol-hybrid... I also wonder how petrol-hybrid emissions are, considering that the catalytic converters cool down when the engine is shut off. Cold catalytics = increased emissions, mayhaps?

But in terms of pollution, Nissan's SULEV Sentra QG engines and the Ford Focus PZEV (US only) are as clean as the Prius.

Of course, if you modify the Prius to be a Plug In Hybrid (PHEV), this brings urban emissions down to near zero levels (except for the powerplant emissions, which are statistically lower than engine emissions)

But then, as I've said before... full-on electric vehicles make more sense in this case, if we're avoiding gas prices and stopping pollution.
