I'm quite tired of the noise of my diesel and would like to quiet it up a little... (actually a lot).
Oh, my car is a 200D W123 Benz BTW.
I've just applied acoustifoam underneath the hood and it did reduce some ambient noise from the engine bay (although my plan was to apply asphalt sheets first before acoustifoam oh well, nagmadali eh), but god knows most of my noise is coming from the firewall, fenders and transmission...
I'm not expecting it to sound like a gasser but at least like a early 90's pickup would be fine.
The W123 firewall is quite thin and di sya double layered like the 126/124 or later variants...
I do understand that some of my small rust holes on the driver side is attributing to the noise. But most of the noise is coming from the said panels talaga.
I'm set to apply asphalt sheets on the firewall, transmission "hump", rear seat (backrest and seat) then layer a sheet of acoustifoam on top of it after I get the all my leaks fixed.
So here are my q's...
1) How can I remove the fenders or at least gain access to it's back side? Sa Japs it's quite easy, just remove the plastic fender plastic ok na... How about the 123s? I'm thinking of spraying ample amounts of thick-type undercoating material then clearcoat it for sealing.
2) How "cluttered" is the firewall (cabin side) of the 123? Dami ba nakaharang?
3) Do you guys know a cheap place to replace the 123 headliner? Heck, right now, I don't care if it's orig or not, the original perforated ceiling is quite expensive. OK na sakin kahit velour/fabric type.
4) How much will it cost to replace my tailpipe? Again, doesn't have to be orig, madami na leaks sa muffler eh.
5) Last na, promise... I tend to "hear" a lot of outside noise coming in from my windows and/or door seals (edges), is there anything I can do to reduce this? I can hear outside noises quite easily even if I'm not moving. If you're having a normal conversation outside, chances are I can hear you if you're talking within 2ft from the car.
I know I'm being picky here since my 200D has served me really well since I've got it, but noise is not something I tolerate, mas ok na sakin mabagal than noisy hehe.
Thanks guys.

1) The 123 also uses fender liners. The fenders can also be removed pretty much the same way as you would your average Japanese car.
2) From what I saw in my 300D, hindi naman. Madali lang siya silipin by removing the dash underpanel.
3) Pinagawa lang namin sa tabi-tabi. Kaso hindi ko na mahagilap ang gumawa. Kopyang-kopya (perforated vinyl). Wala daw kasi siyang ganung gamit.
Baka kaya kopyahin ng Coventry square iyan. Nasa Banawe sila. Tabi ng Equipt.
4) Yung piping mismo? Less than 3K ata yun kung after the manifold ang simula.
5) Based on my experience, mas maingay ang 4 cylinders kaysa sa 5 cylinder ng 300D. Walang insulation sa headliner yung sakin dati. And wala din sa doors.
Mercedes Benz approached the problem on later models by encapsulating the engine (besides the cabin). This meant insulation on all sides of the engine (even underneath).

Salamat Otep..
1) Hmm... Meron ba? hehe parang wala akin, check ko ulit...
2) That's good to hear...

Otep: May nakita ako na pang engine bay talaga na insulation sa Wurth, hanapan ko ng presyo... although malaki narin tinahimik ng interior ko when the car is moving, the droning noise of the engine/tranny while in motion has been reduced dramatically... Sa idle and around 60kph up nalang ang ingay... Mostly sa tranny, tires and my dreaded fuel knock pag idle.

Plugged ba lahat ng holes sa firewall (yung divider between engine and cabin) mo? Laking tulong if you plug all the holes up.
Saka thick insulation sa floor and transmission tunnel.
