I am planning to buy my Mother and Father a second-hand SUV for their daily use. Here are my choices

a 1999/2001 Revo with a Diesel engine (MT) for 280k Php
a 2001 Honda CRV running on Gas (MT) for 280k Php
a 2002 Subaru Forester running on Gas (MT) for 315k Php

Can you please help me as to which one I should buy? All of the above are in good running conditions and have pretty decent exteriors and interiors. My concerns are on the following:

    Fuel efficiency
    Parts and service maintenance
    Durability

The seller of the Forester told me that it's FE is at 19 city and 25 highway MPG. Is this possible in the current city traffic situation? Comparing it to the Revo, the seller said it was at around 11/13 MPG combined using Diesel. I'm a bit confused as to why the Forester seems to consume less fuel as against the Revo.

    Any feedbacks would be well-appreciated.

i used to have a diesel revo. the revo is locally sourced and is still popular, hence its still-inflated used car price. it's also easy to maintain. the diesel comes only as a manual trans, and can do 9-10 kilometers per liter (that's about 22 MPG) when driven in our city.
the 2001 CRV, everyone knows it gargles gas.
the forester, i don't know the exact figures, but i do not think it can honestly compare with the diesel revo's fuel efficiency. and because it wasn't sold in large numbers back in 2002, i do not think you will find it as easy to maintain as the other two.
my bet is the diesel revo.
btw, how old and how tall are your parents? the revo has a tall floor, and some small adults or old people find it not as easy to get in/out, as compared to, say, a regular sedan.

The Revo is a very practical and tough no nonsense vehicle. It'll get the job done but don't expect it to be comfortable or fast. We have one and I get around 7-8km/L city and about 10-12km/L highway. The low MPG figures you were referring to may be coming from the gasoline variants which are heavy guzzlers.

The CRV and Forester are nowhere near as practical or as fuel efficient as the Revo. But then they weren't designed with these in mind. It all depends on your priorities.

thanks for the input...in terms of ride comfy, how is a 1999 Revo compared to the 1997 CRV?

    thanks!

Hindi talaga problema ang ride height or floor height ng Revo. Our old man is 75 years old and he still drives the Revo from time to time. As for comfort, syempre mas comfortable ang CRV. CUV yan eh, with a platform shared with the EK Civic. Handling is also very, very good since like the same era Accord and Civic, it also uses double wishbone suspension, fore and aft. The Revo uses a truck based ladder frame suspension. The ride is not bone jarring hard like that of a pickup or an FB type AUV, but not what you'd call comfortable either. Steering is very light, very car-like in fact in this aspect. In fact, it has the lightest steering among all the cars in our family which includes the Escape and Accord. Handling is, as expected of a car of this class, truck-like. It leans heavily in corners though that can be significantly reduced when using bigger tires. Using bigger tires can also significantly add up to the ride comfort. Some things you can improve on with the car is better sound insulation. The noisy engine transmits a lot of that noise into the cabin. Also, it is a slow-ass car. Adding an aftermarket air filter would do much to improve this.

Well, I have been in several revos and they're not comfortable.

I think the CRV would suit your parents better. Especially your mom. Since it's relatively smaller and more ... let's put it at ... modern-looking.

thanks for the quick reply dr.d....

how about a 1997-98 CRV? is it a gas guzzler as well? I saw an ad today for a 97 CRV being sold at 260k only...

also, my Mom is 61 years old and 5'2 while my Dad is 60 and 5'9....I guess it won't be much of an issue for both of them to get in/out of a Revo if ever we take that route....

so it's now down to the 1999 Revo and 1997 CRV....would a 2001 Adventure be as good as those two as well?

    Thanks!
